La Porte High School Announces 2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian Candidates

Principal Ben Tonagel, of La Porte High School, is proud to announce the names of the valedictorian and salutatorian candidates from the Class of 2019.

Tyler Benn is La Porte High School’s Valedictorian candidate for the Class of 2019. He is the son of Sam and Kelly Benn. Tyler plans to attend Purdue University for Aerospace Engineering.

Rachel Gerick is LaPorte High School’s Salutatorian candidate for the Class of 2019. She is the daughter of Robert and Julie Gerick. She plans to attend Oral Roberts University to major in Biochemistry and minor in Spanish.

Candidates for valedictorian/salutatorian must meet Academic Honors requirements. Qualification points are awarded for honors courses, dual credit courses, AP courses, and total credits earned.

There were 26 finalists for the valedictorian and salutatorian designation from the Class of 2019. Each student maintained a 4.0 GPA and is ranked number one in the Class of 2019. The valedictorian and salutatorian will address their class at commencement on June 9, 2019, at Kiwanis Stadium.

Congratulations to these Slicers for their outstanding achievements at La Porte High School. Their academic achievements exemplify LPCSC’s mission of “Learn Today to Excel Tomorrow.” The Slicer community is proud of these students, and we wish them the very best as they graduate from LPHS.

Additional Info Tyler Benn is La Porte High School’s Valedictorian candidate for the Class of 2019. He is the son of Sam and Kelly Benn. Tyler plans to attend Purdue University for Aerospace Engineering. He has been accepted into the Purdue Honors College. Tyler is a member of the LaPorte High School Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. He was recognized as a 2019 Indiana Association of School Principals Academic All-Star nominee for LPHS in addition to being a Commended National Merit Scholarship Scholar. He was awarded the LaPorte High School Marching Band Outstanding Senior Award and Kiwanis Club “Kiwanis Builds Forever” Award. Tyler is active in the community serving as a four-time elected “Senior Patrol Leader” for his Boy Scout troop, making him responsible for planning and running events and campouts. He volunteers for the Salvation Army, and works summer lawn care. Tyler’s interests include music, studying aviation, calligraphy, working in the garden, and building things with his father.

Rachel Gerick is LaPorte High School’s Salutatorian candidate for the Class of 2019. She is the daughter of Robert and Julie Gerick. She plans to attend Oral Roberts University to major in Biochemistry and minor in Spanish. Rachel is a recipient of the ORU Fellows Scholarship and member of the honors program. Additionally, she is the recipient of the ORU Quest-Whole Person Scholarship. Rachel received the Bausch & Lomb Science Award and Junior Outstanding Student of the Year award at LaPorte High School. She is a team captain and 4-year Cross Country participant and member of the Symphony Orchestra. Rachel is a LaPorte High School National Honor Society member and she serves as the treasurer of the Tri-M Honor Society. Rachel is active in 4-H and works as a server at Brentwood Assisted Living and laborer at 4C’s Nursery. She volunteers as a peer tutor and is active in the Bethel Chapel Youth Group and women’s community Bible study.
