Questions vary as your mind wanders to the topic. Do you want to give everything to charity? You have to have a will for that. Do you want everything to go to your spouse or children? You have to have a will for that. While there are federal and state procedures governing what happens when planned giving hasn’t taken place, none of them reflect your personal decisions about where your assets go.

Maggi Spartz, President of Unity Foundation, talked about the importance of planned giving and how Unity can help you start.

“Planned giving is important for two reasons. One, you can be sure that your intentions are actually carried out if you put it in writing,” Spartz said. “The other reason people do it is for tax benefits. The IRS gives us all kinds of ways to give that reduce our tax burdens.”

Regardless of your age or health status, it’s smart to think about planned giving right now.

“So many people haven’t thought about what is going to happen to their assets or dependents when they die, and once they think about it, they can start getting others to,” Spartz said.

The Unity Foundation of La Porte County has an online tool on their website to help start the process. You make an account and go through each step of what you should be thinking about before you even see an attorney.

“It’s a really cool tool that’s easy to use. If everyone did it we wouldn’t be having as many emergency fundraisers for people and their families,” Spartz said. “If they just did a little planning like buying a life insurance plan, that can head off a lot of issues.”

Plus, having a will or even prepaying and planning for funeral expenses can ease the burden of your love ones. With no will your family might get caught up in legal proceedings that can take obscene amounts of time to resolve.

“You’re easing the burden on your family when you plan,” Spartz said. “My mom never wanted to be a burden so she made sure she pre-planned her funeral and saved us a lot of money because she had already bought everything for us and she got to decide what happened.”

When the day came, Spartz and her family were able to lay their mom to rest and celebrate her memory without any sort of hassle of planning and paying for a funeral. It’s also good to leave a copy of your will with a professional (such as an attorney) so that it doesn’t go missing by the time it needs to be read.

“Start right now,” Spartz said. “There’s no reason not to have some basic outline of what you would like to see happen.”

A CompressAir Employee Spotlight: Steve Hill https://laportecounty.life/article/a-compressair-employee-spotlight-steve-hill/ Mon, 17 Feb 2020 08:55:30 +0000 Curtis Hankins https://laportecounty.life/article/a-compressair-employee-spotlight-steve-hill/ Steve Hill, born and raised in Springfield, Illinois, is an expert in one of the Region’s most unique markets – compressed air. It is a thriving industry, led by Hill and other experts at CompressAir, a family-owned business operating in Northwest Indiana since 1987.

Hill joined the CompressAir team more than four years ago. He had experience in the industry as a product manager for Sullair and loved the work, but wanted a slight shift in environment.

“I was looking to get out of a corporate setting, but still wanted to stay in the compressor industry,” Hill said. “That’s when I approached CompressAir’s owner, Andy Crowl, about taking on their new territory in Chicagoland as a salesman. It was my perfect opportunity to stay in an industry that I’d come to love, and since CompressAir is a Sullair distributor I was able to stay with a product I was familiar with.”

Hill now serves as CompressAir’s Chicagoland Air System Specialist, a role that keeps him incredibly busy.

“No day is the same, and that’s what I love most about my job,” he said. “CompressAir has only been in the Chicagoland area for a few years, so a lot of what I do is stopping by businesses to drop off marketing items.”

Marketing is just one part of the job, however, and he spends a large part of his time working with or on behalf of customers.

“Part of my day can consist of checking in on projects I have going or visiting service technicians working a service call and ensuring the customer is happy,” Hill said. “I try to spend at least one – two days in the office working on service or equipment quotes for customers, or coming up with plans for new projects I have coming up.”

The time he spends with customers leads him to his favorite aspect of working at CompressAir.

“I love helping our customers come up with a plan for their compressed air remodels or new construction,” he said. “This means coming up with a plan from the bottom up, including new or additional equipment and expanding or replacing their air piping.”

The work itself is fun, but what makes it special for Hill is seeing the customer’s reactions.

“Renovations and new construction can be a stressful time for customers,” he said. “By making a plan and following through, we get to set their minds at ease so they don’t have to worry about the compressed air portion of their developments.”

Outside of work, Hill loves to spend time with his wife and two kids. They are big on the outdoors, whether it be camping, hunting, or simply heading out to a baseball game.

Franciscan Alliance to invest $20 million in Michigan City to repurpose Franciscan Health’s Homer Street campus https://laportecounty.life/article/franciscan-alliance-to-invest-20-million-in-michigan-city-to-repurpose-franciscan-healths-homer-street-campus/ Fri, 14 Feb 2020 23:58:52 +0000 Franciscan Health https://laportecounty.life/article/franciscan-alliance-to-invest-20-million-in-michigan-city-to-repurpose-franciscan-healths-homer-street-campus/ MICHIGAN CITY | The Franciscan Alliance Board of Directors have approved funding approximately $20 million in projects that will bring additional services to the former Franciscan Health Michigan City hospital location on Homer Street.

The board approved the funding to completely repurpose Franciscan Health’s Homer Street campus after the opening of a new hospital at 3500 Franciscan Way in January 2019. Funding will be used to tear down all but the 2001 patient tower, emergency department and parking garage. A Franciscan Health ExpressCare location will continue to operate out of a portion of the previous emergency department.

The funds will also go toward renovating all levels of the patient tower to welcome a Franciscan PACE (Program for the All-inclusive Care of the Elderly) program on the ground floor and to relocate Franciscan Health Michigan City’s 14-bed inpatient Behavioral Medicine Unit (BMU) from the hospital’s fifth floor to the second-floor patient tower at Homer Street. Discussions are also under way with other community partners to offer programs and services at the renovated Homer Street campus that will advance Franciscan Health’s Mission and address priorities identified by its recent community health needs assessment (CHNA). “Programming, planning and design on the Homer Street project will kick off soon. When we are finished, the new and improved Homer Street campus will be thriving once again with existing and new programs and services to meet the needs of the communities we serve for many years to come,” said Franciscan Health Michigan City President and CEO Dean Mazzoni.
