Good Community Leadership-It Starts with YOU!

By: Monica Komasinski Last Updated: July 24, 2013

Thirty years ago, a group of dedicated community leaders gathered to discuss the need for qualified individuals to serve on local boards of directors for non-profit organizations. Those discussions formed the early roots for the development of Leadership La Porte County, Inc.

Leadership LaPorte County was formed in 1984 as a 501 c 3 organization. The purpose of the new organization was to identify, train and utilize a pool of knowledgeable and qualified leaders to serve the various community needs in LaPorte County. The first adult leadership class was formed in the fall of 1984 and the group completed their training in the spring of 1985.

Through the years, the organization has provided an annual program for adult members of the community to engage in leadership development, community knowledge, team building exercises, networking and skill development. A youth leadership component was added to the program in the early 1990’s to engage high school students in servant leadership and community development. In the early 2000’s a middle school program was also developed. Hundreds of community members have participated in and benefitted from the programs coordinated by Leadership LaPorte County (LLC).

LLC’s mission is to inspire, develop, cultivate and connect emerging and existing leaders to serve their diverse communities. Feedback from program participants indicates that the program has served its mission in a variety of ways. Many have indicated both professional and personal development along the way. Participants have been inspired to run for political office, donate their time to a local organization, enroll in higher education, run a marathon, and so much more. Participants have developed their team-building skills, their networking skills, their problem solving skills and their leadership capacity. Participants have cultivated a desire to use their full potential and have connected with each other, the community, and with the organizations and speakers they meet along the way. Program participants experience a shift in thinking, acting and being. They leave the program having experienced a change.

In these busy times, many of us get in to a routine which takes away from our ability to reflect, learn and grow as individuals. Dedicating the time to self-awareness, goal setting, skill building and community awareness sometimes gets overlooked among the myriad of responsibilities we have in the workplace and with family obligations.

We owe it to ourselves, our families, our employers and our community to be our best selves; to give back, to grow and to prosper.
