By: Handley Elementary School Last Updated: April 12, 2013

Handley-Elementary-SchoolEven though the weather doesn’t feel like it, April is upon us. April promises to be another busy month at Handley School. It will bring ISTEP testing for grades 3-5 along with mCLASS assessments for grades K-2. The Fun Fair is also planned for April 19 from 6-8 p.m. Please consider volunteering as well as joining the fun. THANK YOU to all of the students, parents, grandparents, and friends that joined the fun at our Burger King night. It was great to see so many Handley families together. Thank you for working together to make Handley School a GREAT PLACE TO BE!!

CHANGE IN MORNING ROUTINE --IMPORTANT: Breakfast for non-bus students is at 8:15 a.m. We ask that non-bus students arrive at 8:15 promptly. This will allow all students to have enough time and space to enjoy their breakfast. THANK YOU!

SOLES 4 SOULS

Your extra pair, could be their first!!

Handley students and families will be partnering with American Licorice Company participate in the Soles4Souls project. We are asking that while doing your spring cleaning, you donate your gently used shoes to Handley School. These used shoes will be redistributed to others in need. In some countries, walking is the main form of transportation, and shoes protect a person’s feet from cuts and infections. Also, children in other parts of the world cannot attend school without a pair of shoes. Please partner with Handley school and American Licorice to help others!!

SCHWANN ORDER

final order before next year – stock up for the summer!!

The PTO will be sponsoring the last Schwann order of the year. The proceeds will be used to purchase recess equipment for the students. Please consider treating your family to some scrumptious meals and treats, so that PTO can treat your child to some fun, new equipment to be used at recess. Every student that has a completed order will be invited to an ice cream party. Order booklets will be sent home soon.

Congratulations Eric Boklund, Jr

Congratulations to Eric for being honored with the Mayoral Award. This award is given out by the mayor of LaPorte and recognizes students for their good deeds and for making a positive difference in the community. Eric is not only a conscientious young man who is always prepared for daily activities, but he is also very caring and respectful of classmates and adults. His is always willing to help a fellow classmate who is struggling with a new concept and goes out of his way to support and include anyone who is feeling left out. He reaches out to others and demonstrates the community spirit that gives those around him a feeling of warmth that comes from knowing such a terrific young man. Eric will be presented his award by Mayor Milo at the Common Council meeting in the Council Chambers at City Hall on Monday. We are so very proud of you, Eric!!

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

Research shows that good attendance is important in order for students to be successful. When a student is not in class, even if he/she “makes up” the work, there is a negative impact on learning. The teacher uses examples and models processes/strategies that benefit students and can’t be duplicated with just paper and pencil. Below is a list of students that were present EVERY DAY during the 3rd grading period (Jan 13- March 14). Students that have a star by their name have been present EVERY DAY, ALL YEAR!!! Way to go!!!
