Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County welcomes the community on August 4

By: Boys & Girls Club of La Porte County Last Updated: July 9, 2021

Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County (BGCLPC) invites the community to celebrate its new name and planned future expansion on Wednesday, August 4 at the Charles R. Westcott Club. A ribbon cutting by the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce will take place at 4:30 PM, with an open house to follow until 6:00 PM. Club tours and light refreshments will be available.

The organization is now in its 25th year, previously operating as Boys & Girls Club of Michigan City. The name change was announced in early 2020 to demonstrate BGCLPC’s commitment to exploring the possibility of expanding its services to additional areas of La Porte County.

“Weeks after we sent out the press release about our new name, the COVID-19 pandemic took hold and we found ourselves focused on learning to safely operate in this challenging climate,” says Michelle Shirk. “However, we’ve also been working behind the scenes to make our vision of program enhancement and expansion a reality. With our feasibility study and strategic plan completed, this seems like the perfect time to invite the community into the Club for an update on our progress.”

This fall, the organization will kick off a $3.1 million capital campaign. Funds raised will be used to construct a custom-designed Boys & Girls Club facility in Michigan City, launch new sites elsewhere in La Porte County and establish an endowment fund to help sustain BGCLPC’s expanded programming. These efforts will allow the organization to more than triple the number of children served annually to 1,500 by 2024.

“This truly is an exciting time for both our Clubs and the kids of our community,” says David Gately, BGCLPC Board President. “Great things are on the horizon, and we can’t wait to bring our plan to fruition. Please come join us, say hi, and help us celebrate!”

The Charles R. Westcott Club is located at 321 Detroit Street in Michigan City. The ribbon cutting and open house are free and open to everyone in the community.

Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a nationwide affiliation of 4,100 autonomous Club organizations. For more information about BGCLPC and its programming, please visit www.bgclpc.org.
