The Financial Services team at GIS supports solid financial futures

What does insurance have to do with financial planning? At General Insurance Services (GIS), a great deal. With a core mission of securing the future of the communities they serve, a client’s financial future is in that mix.

“One of the reasons that GIS chose to open this group is to further the company’s mission. It naturally flows that the type of services we provide would further that mission as well, keeping people secure from a financial angle,” said Wendy Loehr, Financial Advisor at GIS.

“I personally feel that as we help individuals in the community to manage their finances and investments and prepare properly for retirement, they are going to be able to live a better life in retirement, and have more spendable and enjoyable wealth to spend in our communities,” said Daniel Todd, Financial Advisor at GIS. “If companies have strong 401(k) plans and we’re helping them to help their employees save and invest for a better retirement, that serves the community very well.”

More than four years ago, GIS realized the opportunity to expand their services into the financial planning world. They pulled together a skilled and knowledgeable team who could offer clients expert advice in setting up retirement saving plans such as 401(k)s or 403(b)s for employees, educating employers and employees on the benefits of financial planning, and helping individuals plan and save for the future.

“Our team’s particular skill set involves helping individuals and business managers align their financial resources with their goals for the future. This includes protecting what they’ve accumulated, providing retirement benefits for employees, and creating customized, comprehensive financial planning and investing for individual needs, wants, and wishes. And we love doing it,” Loehr said. 

For businesses offering their employees a retirement savings plan, the financial services team at GIS takes pride in educating employees on their plan and investments and ensuring their plan is working for them. And for those individuals who do not have an employer-offered retirement plan, GIS Financial Services will set them up with a customized plan to meet their financial goals. 

“The traditional sources of money that support a comfortable retirement, such as company pensions, have become very scarce, leaving us in need of planning and amassing our own nest eggs,” Loehr said. “As Benjamin Franklin said, ‘If you fail to plan you plan to fail.’ We take this advice to heart. We think it’s important for everyone, regardless of what they have or don’t have, to have a financial plan. We enjoy working with customers to customize and flesh things out.”

“I love being face to face with people of all ranges of investment experience, but I especially love working with people who are just beginning to invest, or are investing in their 401(k) plan but may not understand how it works and how it can help them reach their long-term investment goals,” Todd said. 

“I love going out to companies, sitting down with people, and walking them through how to navigate their portfolio and investments,” he added. “I love educating others and getting feedback from people or a thank you, and seeing their excitement when they understand and realize that little things make big things happen over time.”

GIS focuses on the individual. Their ultimate goal is always to ensure financial wellbeing, and they take that very seriously.

“We offer a very individualized and customer-focused process. We seek to interact with everyone as if they are our family members. I advise my clients the same way I would advise my cousin, best friend, or parents. That’s the kind of advice that I feel I need to give people and that is what sets us apart. We’re not setting people up with what will make us (GIS) the most money, we’re setting them up with the best products that will meet their needs,” Todd said.

Putting the client first, the team’s services are fee-based rather than commission-based. 

“Being fee-based pushes us into a position of fiduciary [responsibility]. We sit on the same side of the table as the client. We’re not negotiating across the table to get the dollars in our pocket, we’re making sure that we’re providing the client with the best option for them. We’re second,” Loehr said.

Having a client-first focus has helped GIS build that trust that Loehr and Todd feel is essential.

“Our customers know that we put them into the right solution for their needs. They stay with us because we have that relationship and trust,” Todd said. “I feel, through my experience with clients, that they trust the advice that I give and they don’t feel like they are being sold anything. We excel at truly providing the education and information to the customer and then letting the customer decide based on that.” 

“Everyone in GIS comes from that same genuine desire to help and truly do the right thing for our customers,” he added.

“We want to have these relationships for the rest of our lives,” Loehr said. “When you are turning over your financial information, for a lot of people there’s great hesitation, so it’s important to build that trust. It has to be there.”
