By: La Porte Police Department Last Updated: July 9, 2015

La-Porte-Police-DepartmentIn June 2015 the La Porte Police Department ran 40 hours of Operation Pull Over funded seat belt patrols. During these patrols, officers wrote a total of 74 citations and 44 warnings. The citations were written for seat belt and child restraint violations; driving while suspended; speeding; texting while driving, and other violations.

In July, we will be running approximately 85 hours of Operation Pull Over funded extra patrols. These patrols include:

Aggressive Driving Patrols: July 10 – July 20
Seat Belt Patrols: July 20 – July 30
Aggressive Driving Patrols: July 31 – August 5

Many citizens are familiar with seat belt patrols, but perhaps are less familiar with aggressive driving patrols. Aggressive driving patrols target those dangerous moving violations that cause or directly contribute to traffic crashes.

“Our community’s traffic crash statistics for 2014 show that just five dangerous driving actions are factors in over 75 percent of crashes,” said Captain Tom Heath. “These five driving behaviors include: stop sign/automatic signal violations and failure to yield; following too closely; unsafe backing; unsafe speed or driving too fast for conditions, and improper turning. Officers will be working to eliminate or reduce these violations, as well as other unsafe driving behaviors, with the goal of reducing crashes and injuries in La Porte.”

Operation Pull Over is a traffic safety grant program funded by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. The goal of Operation Pull Over is to reduce traffic crashes injuries and fatalities by promoting passenger restraint use, and supporting impaired and dangerous driving enforcement.
