Purdue University Northwest’s (PNW) Building Community Through the Arts program is hosting their annual black history month poetry slam at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13. Poets are provided a platform for performing their original pieces under the theme, “There is no better than adversity.”
The event will be held at the PNW CHESS art gallery located at 7011 Indianapolis Blvd., Hammond, Ind. Doors open at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and guests will receive free giveaways.
“The Third,” a Chicago based rapper and poet, will perform and serve as a guest judge at the event. Also serving as judges are Krystal Wilson, a local poet and performer and Jamia Steele, a local poetry and music event organizer.
Submissions for the poetry slam are open to the public. Poems are to be no longer than three minutes when read and are limited to one submission per participant. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. The deadline for submitting a poem is Saturday, Feb. 8. For submission details and rules, visit www.pnw.edu/bcta
