Event Information
La Porte Hospital is opening the doors of its chapel for another “First Friday” concert. On July 5, at noon, the community will be treated to a performance by organist, conductor and scholar, Benjamin A Stone. This patriotic themed performance is titled America the Beautiful: Music by American Composers. All are welcome.
Ben currently serves as Director of Music and Organist at First United Methodist Church (UMC) in South Bend, Indiana, where he directs the Sanctuary Choir and Hand bell Choir, curates the church’s concert series, and presides over two pipe organs, a 1987 Berghaus and 1946 Aeolian-Skinner. At First UMC, Ben has cultivated a dynamic, diverse music program of cantatas and festivals alongside a thriving music ministry for Sunday worship. Previously, Ben served as a graduate assistant and assistant organist at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (University of Notre Dame), where he accompanied and conducted the Liturgical Choir, Women’s Liturgical Choir, Basilica Schola, and Gregorian Chant Schola.
A passionate educator, Ben teaches courses in Musicianship at the University of Notre Dame, where he maintains a full studio of undergraduate organ students, and teaches Music History courses for music majors at St. Mary’s College. He also is an instructor in the Organist Training Program of the Notre Dame Children’s Choir, teaching piano and organ students from ages seven to seventeen.
As an advocate for fine organ building and preservation of historic organs, Ben has served as a consultant for several projects, ranging from new organs to restorations and rebuilds of existing instruments.
Ben holds Master of Sacred Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees, summa cum laude, in Organ Performance and Theology from the University of Notre Dame. He is currently a candidate for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance there, and is completing a dissertation on the chorale-based organ music of Johann Ludwig Krebs and Gottfried August Homilius. He studied organ with Profs. Craig Cramer, Douglas Reed, and Paul Walker; conduct with Profs. Carmen-Helena Téllez and Mark Doerries; and is advised in his doctoral work by Prof. Mary Frandsen.
