Habitats of the Valparaiso Moraine

Habitats of the Valparaiso Moraine

Event Information

9:26pm - 9:26pm

Harbor Country Hikers (HCH) will hike the Indiana Dunes National Park Pinhook Trail System which features two very different habitats.

We will begin our adventure by hiking the Bog Trail which leads to a depression in the Valparaiso Moraine created when a large piece of ice broke off the melting glacier. As part of an National Park Service sponsored open house, rangers will be stationed along the trail to help us understand this unique place filled with carnivorous plants.

Our next adventure will be hiking the Upland Trail which highlights a rich beech and maple forest growing on top of the Valparaiso Moraine which was formed over 15,000 years ago. Pat will be explaining the huge impact this particular moraine has made to Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and insect repellent.
