Beauty and the Beast

Purdue University Northwest’s (PNW) Communication and Creative Arts Department will present Warren Graves’ production of “Beauty and the Beast” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9; at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10; at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23; and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 in Alumni Hall in the Student Union & Library Building, located at 2233 173^rd Street on the Hammond campus.

“Beauty and the Beast,” is directed by Morgan McCabe, a faculty member in PNW’s communication and creative arts department. She has directed shows for more than 40 years and this is her fifth production at PNW.

“This show will be a magical retelling of the classic fable and a beautiful illustration of the transformative power of love and trust,” McCabe said.

This miraculous story features a merchant named Blotti, who is unable to find his way home through a confounding forest after his misfortunes in the China seas and stumbles into the magic castle of the Beast. The Beast offers him riches to please his trio of lovely daughters, along with the Key of Journeys to find his way home again, if Blotti promises to send his youngest and purest daughter, Beauty, to live with him in the Castle.

This non-musical version of the traditional fable is filled with wry humor, scenes of daring and magic that will appeal to adults, as well as children. It is Beauty's special magic of innocence and goodness that holds the key to the transformations of those she loves, and that ultimately frees the Beast from his prison.

Matthew Zipko, a PNW student majoring in marketing and accounting, plays the role of Blotti. “It’s a classic fairytale with a twist. It still has the magic element but with added humor, darkness and romance,” Zipko said.

Ticket pricing is as follows: $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens; $10 for students with a PNW ID and for students aged 12 to 18; and free to children under 12 years old. Tickets can be purchased online at www.pnw.edu/theatre/ or at the door.
