The La Porte County Family YMCA kicked off their Strong Kids Campaign May 14, 2013. With donations to support this wonderful campaign, supporters will be moving the mission forward by helping families when they need it most, such as the following story!
Austin has had a very rough past two years. He was taken away from his family, let his grades slip, and was not doing well in athletics. You can understand why the past two years have been pleasant for this young 16 year old. Due to legal issues, his family was torn apart and Austin has been moved to be with a foster parent until the court declares his mother as being fit to take care of him and his younger siblings.
Dealing with the issues from his family, Austin lost his passion for school, sports, and life in general. He has always done well in school and excelled in sports, including his favorite sport basketball. Playing basketball is something that really motivates Austin to do well in school and in life; it makes him more confident.
When he lost his motivation, it was hard for him to concentrate in school and to live as a happy kid. By coming to the YMCA and playing basketball, working out, and being around positive people, he found himself becoming the motivated individual he once was. The YMCA allowed him to become happy and confident again. He could be himself here at the Y.
Austin said, "Being on the court is the only place where my heart feels complete until I am back with my entire family." Hearing this should make all the staff, volunteers, and donors feel wonderful because they are helping to positively impact lives everyday.
