“Who Does She Think She Is?”

Who-2DOCUMENTARY AT SOUTHERN SHORE ART ASSOCIATION

“Creating art is not important. Finding yourself through creating art is what’s important. Art is a risk, but a risk you have to take.” This is the theme of the award-winning PBS documentary to be previewed Sunday, March 17 at 2pm (CST) at the Southern Shore Art Association Gallery at 724 Franklin Street in Michigan City. The film is part of the SSAA month-long exhibition “Fifty Shades of Female: An Exhibition of Women as Subject.” An audience discussion follows the free film event.

For any woman or man who has ever felt the urge to develop their artistic self-expression, “Who Does She Think She Is?” will lead the way. This riveting PBS film follows five bold women, a painter, sculptor, filmmaker, musician and actress who each have a fierce calling. It explores the challenges of commitment to their art form with the struggle to meet the responsibilities of nurturing children and spouses and economic balance while retaining the creative fire within. The documentary also discusses the emerging role of the female creative in our society, women long overdue for recognition in the art world.

In support of “Silent Witness,” a forthcoming local campaign focusing on women’s abuse issues, Gerry Jones of The Stepping Stone shelter will give a short presentation at the end of the afternoon’s program.
