Weekend Prep Sports Round-Up 02-10-14

The Marquette Catholic boys basketball team returned to action on Friday evening and were able to capture a 98-93 victory over Gary Lew Wallace. Marquette will return to action on Friday, February 14 when they travel to New Buffalo High School. JV tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. eastern time with varsity to follow.

Penn 46, La Porte 40 (Girls Basketball)

The La Porte High School girls basketball team suffered just their second loss of the season on Saturday, dropping a 46-40 decision to Penn High School in Mishawaka.

Nicole Konieczny had 12 points and Kyleigh Kubik added 10 for the Slicers. The Slicers had a 25-18 lead at halftime.

Valparaiso 112.475, Lake Central 95.925 (Gymnastics)

The Valparaiso High School gymnastics team earned a victory over their Duneland Athletic Conference rivals on Friday. VHS won the Team 2 competition as well, 106.575-66.000.

Hobart 38, Valparaiso 16 (Girls Basketball)

Zoe Wilson had 16 points and Grayce Roach added 11 for the Brickies in the February 4 contest.

Valparaiso 58, La Porte 51 (Boys Basketball)

Andrew Paul had 21 points to lead host Valparaiso to the Duneland Athletic Conference win on Friday. Cole Wolf had 13 points and Conner Tenhove added 10 for the Vikings.

Josh Fleming had eight points for La Porte in the loss.

Merrillville 64, Portage 47 (Boys Basketball)

Jacob Bearss had 12 points and Tim Bryant added seven for Portage in the loss. Merrillville won the JV contest, 41-27 despite 10 points from Portage's Brian Mihal.

Wrestling Sectionals

Portage took second place at sectionals on Saturday. Gaige Torres and Matt Hendrix were first place winners for the Indians. Ten Indians qualified for semi-state.

Girls Swimming Sectionals

Portage placed third. Girls that placed in the top eight include Jordan Parker, Laryssa Vaclavik, Courthney Jospeh, Carlie Parpart, Nancy Michko, Ali Sobkowski and Rachael Joseph.

Valparaiso 42, Hammond Bishop Noll 36 (Boys Basketball)

Valparaiso outscored the Warriors 18-2 in the second quarter to claim the non-conference victory on Saturday. Conner Tenhove scored 17 points to lead the Vikings.
