Indiana-Dunes-Tourism-LogoThe recently-released USA Today Chicago City Guide features a two-page spread about getting away to Chesterton, Valparaiso and Michigan City.

The article, written by Chicago travel writer Elaine Glusac, is titled, “Coastal Culture. The towns of Lake Michigan’s southern shore -- Chesterton, Michigan City, and Valparaiso -- will draw you in with a mix of nature and artistry.”

The article directs people to Indiana Dunes State Park and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore for outdoor fun.

The Chesterton portion of the article focuses on the arts, unique shopping and history. It includes the Century of Progress Homes, the Beverly Shores Depot Museum, the Schoolhouse Shop, Katie’s Antiques, Yesterday’s Treasures Antique Mall, the Westchester Township History Museum and Chesterton Art Center. It also mentions dining spots like Octave Grill, Popolano’s and Wagner’s Ribs.

In Valparaiso, the article directs people to Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art, the Memorial Opera House, the Porter County Museum of History and Anderson’s Vineyard & Winery. The article recommends dining at Don Quijote Restaurant and having dessert at Valpo Velvet Ice Cream.

The Michigan City section of the article features Barker Mansion, the Haskell-Barker Car Shop Houses, Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, Michigan City Public Library and Lubeznik Center for the Arts. The restaurants mentioned are Swingbelly’s, Sahara and Panini Panini.

Indiana Dunes Tourism Executive Director Lorelei Weimer said the tourism bureau worked with the travel writer after meeting her at a Chicago media luncheon. Weimer said Indiana Dunes Tourism is excited to see Indiana Dunes Country featured in the USA Today Chicago City Guide as a great getaway.

Indiana Dunes Country is the perfect getaway for a weekend trip or an extended stay,” Weimer said.

The article did a great job of highlighting the dunes while also pointing out that there is so much more to enjoy.”

Indiana Dunes Country last year received coverage as a destination by National Geographic, USA Today, Parents magazine, Midwest Living, AAA Living magazine and AAA Midwest Traveler magazine.
