Tri Kappa Sock Hop Provides Family, Fun and Dancing

Saturday, Feb. 2 was a great night for family, fun and dancing. La Porte’s Tri Kappa hosted its annual Sock Hop at the Civic Auditorium in La Porte. Not even the cold weather and snow could stop families from enjoying the fun. Guests were asked to bring socks, which would then be donated to less fortunate families.

Dr. Groovy & the Soul Surgeons provided live entertainment for the evening. Poodle skirts and bobby socks were the attire of choice on the dance floor. Hula hoop, dance and costume contests kept kids and adults on their feet. Mayor Blair Milo was the special guest on hand helping Tri Kappa members judge and announce the winners of contests.

Various games were also available for children to play. Bozo buckets, ring toss, and racing games were just a few of the selections. La Porte High School sophomore and Girl Reserves member Abigail Pilecki was one of many volunteers helping for the evening.

“I love coming to the sock hop and seeing everyone dressed in their poodle skirts. My favorite part is being here with my friends,” Pilecki said.

Families were able to visit the concession stand and get refreshments and pizza provided by Wana Pizza. There was also a baked goods sale, which was provided by the ladies of Tri Kappa.

Tri Kappa member Stacey Harris remarked that the best part of the Sock Hop was “seeing the kids have fun.”

“It is family oriented,” she said. “All kinds of kids are running around and their parents can feel okay about them having a good time and not necessarily having to be with them every single second. They are in a safe environment.”

Tri Kappa collects money through various fundraisers and the Sock Hop is one of their main events. In return, the money collected is given out as grants throughout the community.
