For the past 20+ years, “elves” or drivers from the La Porte Community School Corporation’s Transportation have helped a family at Christmas. Each year a different elementary school identifies a family in need and the process starts with enlisting drivers help for donations of canned goods, clothing, and toys.
Over the years, bus drivers have bought new items, donated items, sought donations from local businesses, and shopped for groceries with donated money. When the donations come in, whether monetary or food items, there is still much to do – food items are inventoried and monies spent for the items that are not donated.
Once the family list is received it is time to start shopping for needed items. Then a date is set for delivery so that the family can separate the gifts for their children before Christmas.
