Tour de La Porte (TdL) 2019 Preview

It’s almost that time of the year again! Tour de La Porte (TdL). The Healthcare Foundation of La Porte (HFL) is proud to present the 17th annual three-day tour of healthy events encompassing cycling, running, and walking - all for a great cause. The event is August 23-25, headquartered at Cummings Lodge in Soldier’s Memorial Park, La Porte.

From the first official TdL in 2002 to last year, the event has raised more than $700,000 to support patients with cancer in La Porte County. So far, 1,095 cancer patients have been assisted with these funds. The event is always open to growth, and that starts with you. Anyone at any fitness level can participate - families, children, weekend warriors, and serious athletes.

TdL, now a La Porte tradition, has seen immense growth throughout the 17 years. But where did it all start?

Back in 2002, local cyclist Larry Noel traveled on his bike across the nation to raise funds for cancer research. He realized even though his adventure was fueled through passion, he was seeking to fulfill a larger mission.

He shared his ideas with none other than HFL President and CEO, Maria Fruth, who was inspired and determined to make his impactful vision a reality.

Here’s the history recap:

The first TdL was a cycling-only event up to 100 miles. For the 5th year, a 5-mile walking portion was added for those who weren’t cyclists. In 2008, the 5-mile walk was replaced with a 5K Run/Walk. The community loved TdL so much that it was extended to a two-day event in 2011, and they added a Half Marathon and 10K Run. In 2014, the event was relocated to Soldiers Memorial Park, where it has stayed ever since.
