Tour de La Porte: Road Closures August 20, 2016

racing-guide-2014/Tour-de-LaPorte-2014-8The public is encouraged to watch La Porte County roads for closures on Saturday, August 20th and to take caution and watch for cyclists on Sunday, Aug. 21st during the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte's (transitioning from the previous La Porte Hospital Foundation) 15th Annual Tour de La Porte bike, run and walk event to benefit local cancer patients.

Tour de La Porte includes a trail run and spaghetti dinner (sponsored and hosted by La Porte Rotary Club) on Friday, Aug. 19th, several running and walking events with be held throughout the morning on Saturday, Aug. 20th, including: half-marathon 21K chip-timed competitive run, 10K chip-timed competitive run, 5K chip-timed competitive run and 5K non-competitive walk and mini fun run. All events will begin and end at Cummings Lodge in Soldiers Memorial Park in La Porte. Temporary road closures are necessary around the area to ensure the safety of participants and residents.

Roads will be blocked by a moving barricade that will open up to traffic once the last runner/walker has passed. Tentative road opening times (CST) are as follows:

  • 8:45 am, Waverly and Orr Lake roads
  • 9 am, Garden Street
  • 9:15 am, N. Goldring and part of W. Small roads
  • 9:30 am, Goldring Road and Weller Avenue
  • 9:45 am, W. 150 N.
  • 10 am, N. 500 W.
  • 10:45 am, Small Road
  • 11 am, Lake Shore Drive
  • 11:15 am, the streets bordering Stone Lake Beach

Police and course monitors will be present to monitor traffic. However, residents living along the course will be permitted to enter and exit the route during slow periods of the race. Motorists are advised to use caution and be extra careful when approaching intersections or pulling out of driveways.

Tour de La Porte includes a cycling event with routes ranging from 5 to 100 miles on Sunday, Aug. 21st. All events will begin and end at Cummings Lodge in Soldiers Memorial Park with participants riding throughout La Porte County all morning and afternoon. No roads will be closed on Aug. 21, however, drivers are encouraged to be extra cautious and aware of passing cyclists on the roadways.

All proceeds from this event directly benefit our community members with cancer in need of financial assistance, and enables community members to access free health screenings. In 2015, Tour de La Porte raised $75,000 to assist families in the community battling cancer. These funds allowed The Foundation to help community members focus on treatment and worry less about financial obligations.
