Top 3 Finish for La Lumiere Student Ming Washington in Indiana’s 2014 Poetry Out Loud Championship

lalu-ming-washingtonOn Saturday, February 22, students from 18 schools competed in Indianapolis for top honors at the 2014 Indiana Poetry Out Loud recitation contest.

La Lumiere freshman Ming Washington of Michigan City was named 2nd Runner-up. Ming recited “Blackberrying” by Sylvia Plath, “Black Boys Play the Classics” by Toi Derricotte, and “I Felt a Funeral in My Brain” by Emily Dickinson. La Lumiere has had a student finish in the top ten at the state competition for each of the past three years. Through the process of choosing, interpreting, memorizing, and declaiming great poems, Poetry Out Loud offers over 365,000 high school students the chance to share their love of literature and to build confidence in themselves as public speakers.
