Region athletes brought the excitement in 2021 as they took the field, court, track, mat, course, stage, and so much more to show off their skills and prove that their hard work has paid off. With so many different games and matches happening across high school and college teams in our area, it can be hard to keep track of all the memories and incredible moments in action.

We have summarized the best sports articles from this past year so you don’t have to. These are the highlights from basketball, football, swimming, running, gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, tennis, softball, golf, and many more.

U.S. Marines National Interscholastic Basketball Conference Series coming to the La Porte Civic Auditorium Jan. 6-8

On November 4, the City of La Porte and Mayor Tom Dermody announced that ESPN and the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) will be coming to the Civic Auditorium from Jan. 6-8 for three days of elite prep basketball. This event is a part of the U.S. Marines NIBC Series that will feature 38 games from schools like La Lumiere School, IMG Academy, and Oak Hill Academy from Dec. 2 to Feb. 5. This series will feature 22 of the ESPN Top 100 Recruits from the Class of 2022.

La Porte hosts its Slicer Invite, welcoming players from across Northern Indiana

Volleyball players from all across northern Indiana walked into La Porte High School early Saturday morning for the 2021 La Porte Slicer Volleyball Invite Tournament.

The schools that participated in the tournament were Carroll High School, Concordia Lutheran High School, Mishawaka Marian High School, Northridge High School, Andrean High School, Munster High School, Mishawaka High School, Warsaw Community High School, Elkhart High School, Saint Joseph's High School - South Bend, and Valparaiso High School.

Hubner Hall of Fame welcomes five new members for their contributions to La Porte

The Hubner Hall of Fame welcomed five new inductees during a special ceremony Friday evening before the La Porte vs. New Prairie football game. 

The honor was bestowed to four athletes and one coach, who included Jim Dermody, Mayor Tom Dermody, Steve Drabyn, Steven Lowe, and Terry Miller. Each was honored for their contribution to Slicer athletics. The five inductees celebrated the honor during a reception for family and teammates before the ceremony.

La Porte Baseball defeats Valparaiso 2-1 in stunning 10-inning game

The La Porte High School Slicers baseball team hosted the Valparaiso High School Vikings this Wednesday. Both teams were evenly matched, making it a game to see who could grind to score. 

Neither team scored until the bottom of the third, when #1 Brady Bernth for the Slicers ripped a double to score the first run of the game.  The Vikings were shut down offensively until the 7th. In the top of the seventh, a hit by #15 Logan Lockhart allowed the Vikings to score their first run of the night. Just like that, the game was tied. 

La Porte Slicers defeat Hobart Brickies in softball season opener

This Saturday, the Hobart High School Brickies Softball Team hosted the La Porte High School Slicers in their first game of the season. The Slicers started off the day strong, racking up three runs by the end of the second inning. The Slicers held the Brickies at zero runs until the bottom of the fifth when a hit by #4 Lindsey Schallenkamp led the first run for the Brickies.

Bowman Eagles beat Marquette Blazers to snag second consecutive 2A Sectional Championship

Most athletes will tell you that the hard-fought victories are the ones that mean the most. This is perhaps most true for this season, the season that almost wasn’t. With this in mind, the Region witnessed one the toughest battles on the court in recent memory as the Bowman Academy Eagles went head-to-head against the Marquette Catholic High School Blazers in Saturday night’s Class 2A Sectional Championship game.

New Prairie High School hosts double header for sectional basketball, comes away with win

It was luck for the designated home teams tonight as the Hanover Central Wildcats defeated the Kankakee Valley Kougars 58 to 36, and the New Prairie Cougars defeated the River Forest Ingots by a whopping 89-35. Both winners of the night were hitting basket after basket with a fire beneath them that could not be outmatched. Especially New Prairie, where every starter and a number of players off the bench managed to down more than a few points for the team. 

South Bend Wildcats claw their way to victory over Michigan City Wolves in IHSAA Class 4A Tournament

The tension and excitement was palpable as Michigan City hosted the South Bend Riley Wildcats in tonight’s IHSAA Class 4A Sectional basketball tournament. 

The Wolves (13-11, 3-4) were ranked 6th overall in the Duneland conference for tonight’s game. They faced a tough opposition going into tonight’s tournament from the Wildcats, but they never gave up and fought hard to the final buzzer and a 91-76 loss to South Bend Riley in tonight’s neutral playoff game.

La Porte comes out on top at Mishawaka Girls Basketball Sectionals

The South Bend Adams Eagles and the La Porte Slicers went head-to-head in the Mishawaka Sectional Championship Game on Saturday night. 

Slicers Coach Sarah DeShone is fresh in her first season as head of the Slicers, making this sectional run one for the books.
