Michigan City High School played host to the “Play 4 Life” Dodgeball Challenge to benefit the United Way of La Porte County on Saturday, with dozens of teams competing for the title.

The event, in its third year of existence, is expected raise over $10,000 for the United Way of La Porte County. Read more...

 

Running Wild at Washington Park Zoo

Picture this- a hot summer day where about 150 individuals gather together to run or walk in support of their local zoo and its workers. That is exactly what happened at the Washington Park Zoo on Saturday morning. Even though the sun was ever present from 9 to 11, it did not stop those involved from finishing the race with pride and determination.

Throughout the morning, water bottles flowed around the area which was a major benefit for everyone who attended as a competitor or supporter. Food and drinks were also provided for the runners afterward if desired. Another perk this year consisted of gaining entrance to the Oasis Splash Park for a cool down after completing the course. What’s the most popular sport in Indiana? Basketball. It’s rare to meet a Hoosier that doesn’t enjoy an exciting game of the sport. If you came to La Porte High School Monday night then you would have experienced an excellent game. It was the Harlem Ambassadors versus the La Porte Legends that evening, and let me tell you, readers, it was a one-of-a-kind game.

The Tour de La Porte: Feel Good While Doing Good

The city of La Porte was all a bustle on Sunday morning because the Tour de La Porte was in full swing. This is the eleventh year for the Tour de La Porte, and each year it gets bigger and better. The event, which takes place at Soldiers Memorial Park, is put on by the La Porte Hospital Foundation (The Foundation) which is a non-profit organization located at the IU Health La Porte Hospital. The Foundation helps to promote healthy living and lifestyles in the surrounding communities. What makes the Tour de La Porte unique is that 100 percent of the proceeds go toward helping cancer patients in the community. The Foundation’s Cancer Fund helps those who cannot afford treatments, helps pay for medications, provides cancer screenings to community members and other beneficial services.

It was a night of dinner and dancing at the La Porte Civic Auditorium. Mayor Blair Milo played hostess to over 400 guests at her first Mayor's Ball.

County officials, family friends, business owners, and city employees attended the ball and all had a grand evening. Proceeds from the event went toward programs that stop substance abuse in La Porte.

Multi-color knee high socks, neon-colored hair, face-paint, tu-tus and running shoes....the latest fashion trend? Well, maybe, however that was what filled the Crichfield Elementary School in La Porte this weekend as hundreds of participants geared up for the first Girls On The Run 5k in La Porte County.

Girls On The Run (GOTR) is a national organization who's mission to "inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running." Each spring and fall girls in 3rd through 8th join teams according to their grade level to be inspired, build friendships and confidence, and train for a 5k during a 12-week program. Read more...

Where can you find gangsters, flappers, The Blues Brothers, and a parade of restaurants all coming together for a good cause? Only at A Night in Old Chicago! The event was presented on Friday evening by United Way of La Porte County and it took place at the Blue Chip Casino’s spectacular Stardust Event Center.

This is the biggest event in Northwest Indiana for United Way of La Porte County. Nearly 600 people showed up, many dressed in 1920s garb. Dave Sisk, the Manager of Community Engagement for United Way of La Porte County was very pleased with the turnout. Read more...

LPHS showed their school spirit at the 2012 Homecoming football game! Besides the colorful characters shown in the photo above, the bleachers were packed with kids and adults wearing the Slicers' colors.

The game was intense and the crowning of Homecoming royalty took place during halftime. Everyone had a gret time!

Halloween Bed Race

A Halloween themed bed race took place on Franklin Street in the Uptown Arts District in Michigan City. Contestants decorated their beds and themselves in spooky and fun costumes to add to the ambiance. This is the eleventh year that the race has been run in Michigan City. It was sponsored by Ryan's Irish Pub.

 Zombies completed the day with a dance number, and a haunted house was available for those who wished to get their pants scared off.

On a chilly afternoon in downtown La Porte was a festive scene. The La Porte Santa Parade and Tree Lighting was in full swing and people from all over the region came out to enjoy the spectacle.

Santa came to town in style with the lovely Mayor Milo at his side.
