Time to Change the Batteries

Smoke-DetectorsThe Michigan City Fire Department would like to remind all residents of Michigan City that the department has smoke detectors available to financially stressed, physically impaired, and elderly home owners at no charge. They also would like to remind landlords that under Michigan City Ordinance #4020 landlords are responsible for installing, maintenance and repair of smoke detectors, except for batteries, in rental units.

Smoke detectors are available at the Fire/Police Training Office at 2510 E. Michigan Blvd or by calling Mark Baker, Public Information Officer at 219-873-1443. A release form must be completed and proof of address in order to receive a free detector.

Installation can be arranged for the physically impaired or elderly.

Detectors for Deaf/Hard of hearing, for those meeting grant guidelines/qualifications, available.
