“Love. It’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru.” When car buyers hear that iconic slogan, the first things that come to mind are probably the love of driving, the love of your family packed into the seats, or maybe the love behind the designers of the cars.
For Subaru, love means all that and more. It goes beyond cars and into the heart of the community, all the way to the Subaru Love Promise –a vision to show love and respect to everybody and dedicate the company to making the world a better place.
One of their most famous ways of doing that is their Share the Love event. During this campaign, Subaru dealers like International Subaru of Merrillville donate $300 of every new car purchase to a charity of the buyer or dealer’s choice. Locally, buyers can choose Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana. But Share the Love is just one small part of the Love Promise, one they call “Subaru Loves to Help.”
Subaru divides the Love Promise into five different categories: Loves the Earth, Loves to Care, Loves to Help, Loves Learning, and Loves Pets.
To demonstrate their love of the Earth, Subaru and their dealers work to reduce waste, protect resources, and preserve natural spaces. Every Subaru product is made in a zero-landfill production plant, and their Indiana plant is the only car factory in the country designated as a backyard wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
“At Subaru, we feel it’s our personal responsibility to protect earth’s natural wonders,” said Tom Doll, President and CEO at Subaru of America, Inc. “We encourage our retailers and customers to engage in smart environmental practices, simply because it’s the right thing to do.”
Loves to Care encompasses Subaru’s efforts to keep the country healthy. They partner with organizations such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Make a Wish, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Special Olympics. Be it funds, blankets, or arts & crafts kits, Subaru provides these organizations with what they need to accomplish their essential work.
Under Loves to Learn, Subaru has donated more than 277,600 books to schools across the country through a partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They also work with Google Expeditions, Teach for America, and Saturday Academy to provide unique or accessible educations to students across the US. Locally, International Subaru of Merrillville just a couple of years ago helped South Haven Elementary School through a difficult time, giving them about 150 books after the school had to destroy their library contents due to a mold issue.
Subaru Loves Pets has the simple goal of returning the love pets give us. Since 2015, Subaru retailers have partnered with local animal welfare organizations to help more than 144,000 animals in need. At the International Subaru of Merrillville, for example, the team coordinates with the South Suburban Humane Society to host pet adoption events at the dealership.
The Love Promise and all of its tenants help make Subaru “More than a car company.” Nationally and locally, they are a part of what helps make our communities strong.
