The Salvation Army of La Porte Enhances Real Services Lunch Program

salvation-army-logoThe Salvation Army of La Porte is developing a lunch and dinner program for seniors. This is an opportunity for anyone to be able to “get out” and eat and fellowship. Good nutrition is vital to good health. In contrast to providing food to seniors from Food Pantries, or prepared food such as “Meals on Wheels”, this provides a better dining experience than just eating another meal, probably alone.

The noon program works cooperatively by enhancing the existing Real Services lunch program, provides activities for the folks, and is available 5 days a week. Transportation is provided through our city’s Transporte bus service. By working with Transporte, anyone can attend regardless if they can drive or not. We launched our program in October with resident’s from The Rumely being the first guests who joined the regular REAL Services participants for lunch and activities in the community dining room. There is room for more! The program is not limited to lunch however as evening meals on a limited basis will be available after the first of the year. The program also provides for social activities for the seniors following the meal (cards, bingo, sing alongs, to name a few).

Transportation, additional food, and activity costs have been funded, in part, through the Community Development Block Grant. Thank You, City of La Porte for choosing the Salvation Army to receive this grant. Together we can innovate and do the most good to improve the health and the lives of everyone, especially the elderly. Anyone 60 years or older who is interested in participating in the program can call the Salvation Army at 326-5342. All are welcome and we would love to have you join us.
