The Oktoberfest was Wunderbar!

The Michigan City Senior Center was abuzz on Saturday as the annual Oktoberfest event. It’s a big party that is put on by the Michigan City Summer Festival Committee. There is authentic German food and drinks, music, and an all around good time.

Mike Hale, Secretary for the Michigan City Summer Festival Board, was amongst the crowd, making sure that everyone had a good time and that things ran smoothly.

“This is a social event so we want to bring everybody together with some music and food and let them chit-chat and socialize for a while…the proceeds from this event go to pay for events that we don’t charge for,” Hale said

The food selection was extensive and delicious from bratwurst to goulash and an assortment of desserts, drinks and other German fare.

John Sheets, owner of Three Sheets Bar and Grill in Michigan City and member of the Michigan City Summer Fest Committee was in the kitchen creating the delicious food that was served to the guests.

“This shows off the large amount of German heritage in Michigan City. Plus it gives the people of Michigan City something fun to do on a lovely October afternoon,” Sheets said.

Eddie Korosa, Jr. & His Boys From Illinois as well as Ein Prosit provided the musik for the evening. They played wonderful and lively tunes that brought many couples out to the dance floor.

Joe Doyle, Chairman for the Michigan City Summerfest Committee was at the event, sporting an awesome lederhosen. He happily helped guests and chatted amiably with his fellow volunteers throughout the event.

“Basically our goal and our charter says to provide various types of entertainment for people of all ages in Michigan City," Doyle said. “We’ve been in existence for more than 60 years. We have changed throughout the years on the best ways go about doing things and tweaking things. We consist of about 12 people and we all have a good time. WE are all volunteers and we are always looking for something new and exciting.”

The Summerfest Committee is busy with lots of events through out the year. In the beginning of the year they start our with a Kiddie Parade, then a Drum and Bugle Corp. Show, a large parade, Festival of Lights, and so much more.

This is a two-day event so if you missed the festivities on Saturday then be sure to come out SundayOctober 13 from 11am-6pm to be part of this great event!
