The Gift of Knowledge from the Door Village Lions Club

2014-The-Gift-of-Knowledge-01The Door Village Lions Club visited Kingsford Heights Elementary School again this year with their “Gift of Knowledge” (Student Dictionaries) for each third grade student in Mrs. Frank’s and Mrs. Hiemstra’s classrooms. Lions Guests included: Tom Konieczny, Irene Konieczny, Gene Flickinger, and George Morley.

The Lions Club Dictionary Project is one of many community service projects the Lions are involved in. Our students were very excited about receiving their very own dictionaries, especially with all the interesting parts such as the sign language section, the Presidents’ section, planets, and maps. Students really got a kick out of seeing the “longest word”, (1, 909 letters.) Gene Flickinger told them there is an even longer word, “smiles” because it has a mile between the first and last letter. Students thought that was hysterical.

Some of their projects include maintaining the park in Door Village, Candy Day Collection for the Salvation Army, and Eye Glasses Collection (to donate eyeglasses to those who cannot afford them.) They have various other fundraising events which fund Leader Dogs for the School for The Blind, Diabetes Awareness, Cancer projects and the eye bank. There were many questions about the eye bank and what that was all about.

They will be out with their red wagon making food at the Sunflower Fest in LaPorte on Sept. 20th and the upcoming Pumpkin Fest in Westville. The funds earned will be used to help fund their many community service projects.
