The 5th Annual Bowl for WORTHY Women Event Rocked the Lanes

Saturday April 13 was the 5th annual Bowl for WORTHY Women event at Casey’s Lanes in La Porte. It was a bowling tournament and fundraiser with all the proceeds going back to the Worthy Women Recovery Home (WWRH) Inc.

WWRH is a safe haven for recently incarcerated woman. There are reentry programs and other necessary tools at the home that will help them turn their lives around and issues such as addictions, substance abuse and reduce the rate of recidivism. WWRH is a nonprofit organization that was started in 2008. In 2011, they raised enough money to buy a house that was to be the heart of the organization. Their goal is to provide a Christian home for former female inmates and to help them become constructive citizens and be a positive impact on their communities.

“Worthy Women Recovery Home actually came as a result of me spending time in the La Porte County Jail for six months. I realized that the ladies that I was working with were coming back over and over and needed a place to stay where they can get structured and get away from the environments that they had been in,"D. E. “Sonshine” Troche said. “So this program is specifically for women coming out of the La Porte County Jail who are struggling with drug and alcohol addictions.”

Since they began, the WWRH volunteer base has grown, people are more aware of the issues that WWRH is trying to address. There were 32 sponsors for the event and 12 teams signed up to compete. People were also able to sign up as individuals. There is a traveling trophy that is awarded to the organization that brings in the most donations. This year’s winner was the La Porte Library.

“It’s been amazing to be out here to have a huge network of supporters and volunteers,” Troche said. “And if you’re looking to help, get up and do something. If you’re not into helping addicts, get out there and help the dog kennel, get out there and help mentor, go help a kid read in school. Go do something good. There are too many people complaining and not doing anything and there are not enough people doing too much. Make La Porte County good.”
