Teacher Receives Service to Children Award

United-Way-LaPorte-Success-AwardKim Klein, lead teacher for the Westville Little School, received the Success by 6 Service to Children Award from the United Way of LaPorte County. The award was presented by Kris Pate, United Way executive director, during the Vision Council Community Conversation breakfast on April 2 at the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa.

Klein was recognized for her commitment to and impact on the early childhood field. She joined the Dunebrook, Inc. staff a year ago to head up the Westville Little School project, a collaborative effort with Purdue University North Central and Westville Public Schools. Gail Johnson, executive director of Dunebrook, nominated Klein for the award.

“Because of Kim Klein, children have grown their academic skill sets, parents have learned how to best support their children’s lifelong learning, and emerging early childhood education professionals have received valuable experience and support,” Johnson said.

During its first year, the Westville Little School has helped 25 four-year-olds develop kindergarten readiness skills through pre-school classes. The year-round classes introduce children and families to school routines, procedures, schedules and support services. Children and families are assessed throughout the year to address their individual needs.

As lead teacher, Klein mentors and supports PNC early education students who participate in the Westville Little School project. Previously, Klein was involved with elementary special needs education teams in Lake County.

Success by 6 is a collaborative initiative between the United Ways of LaPorte, Lake and Porter Counties. It is dedicated to ensuring that children enter school ready to learn and with the skills needed to be successful.
