There is no other better place than Sunset Grille to hold the Annual Grand Prix. The Grand Prix is anticipated to have thousands of people from across the Region and country coming to Michigan City this weekend to watch the race.
This is the third time Sunset Grille has had the honor of hosting some of the world’s fastest and most powerful offshore boats racing on the southern shores of Lake Michigan.
The second night of the event started off with spokesmen welcoming attendees followed by the Michigan City mayor cutting the ribbon and then a celebratory champagne toast. The night ended with live music from Michael Ferri and Jerry Scott of Soulshine, yummy fish, brisket, cheese, and fruit appetizers made by Sunset Grille.
The first day of the event started out with a golf outing at Michigan City Municipal Golf Course. Coming up, there will be a Taste of Michigan City and Classic Rock held on Washington Park Beach Friday. Saturday will consist of a vintage car show, the VIP Tent open at Washington Park Boardwalk, the P1 AquaX/OPA Racing, boat parade and block party and again, Classic Rock. Sunday will continue to pick up where it left off the day before, ending the five-day event with the awards ceremony at Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa.
Sunset Grille sold up to 400 tickets and had to give an extra 50. Tickets go fast for this event as they always sell out a week in advance.
As every person native to Northwest Indiana knows the beaches of Lake Michigan are incredible, including Washington Park Beach. Boat racers and fans get to soak in the Indiana scenery as well as the beautiful Lake Michigan.
While everyone can agree the views from on top of Sunset Grille are breathtaking, the economic impact it has on the Michigan City and La Porte County is also notable.
The Grand Prix has poured from $12-15 million into the community. This has been made possible because of the sponsors and racers, such as one of the race teams that donated a total of $40,000 to the Washington Park Zoo as well as donating $10,000 to tomorrow's night event.
“It brings a lot of money into our community and our residents love it. The visitors love it, and it’s the biggest regional event,” said Jack Arnett, Executive Director with the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
During the ribbon cutting, Sunset Grille was pleased to announce that Offshore Powerboat Association will be continuing its lease for five more years, meaning that you can look for Sunset Grille hosting the VIP Grand Prix for at least five more years to come.
