St. Mary Medical Center Named Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

St-Mary-Medical-Center-Named-Center-of-ExcellenceSt. Mary Medical Center was recently named a Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG), by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and the Surgical Review Corporation. The COEMIG program recognizes surgeons and facilities that demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based gynecologic care. St. Mary Medical Center is one of three hospitals in Indiana to have earned COEMIG designation.

St. Mary Medical Center Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Douglas Dedelow, DO, FACOOG, of Innovative Women’s Health, led the hospital’s accreditation initiative and was named a designated COEMIG physician. As a COEMIG designated physician, Dedelow has demonstrated significant, ongoing experience performing minimally invasive gynecologic procedures.

“The COEMIG program is focused on improving the safety and quality of gynecologic patient care and lowering the overall costs associated with successful treatment,” said Dedelow. “We strive to provide our patients with a higher level of care using advanced techniques and minimally-invasive gynecologic procedures.”

The designation was accomplished after months of coordinated effort during which the St. Mary Medical Center team provided information on all aspects of its minimally invasive gynecology program and processes, including data on its surgical outcomes. COEMIG designation requires an extensive review of a hospital’s surgical facilities, operations, procedures and outcomes as well as its staff’s education, training and continuous quality improvement efforts.

“Earning the center of excellence designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery patients,” said Janice Ryba, CEO, St. Mary Medical Center. “The COEMIG program fosters quality improvement in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and participation has focused our team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines. But most importantly, our commitment to excellence improves the health and well-being of our patients.”

The COEMIG program is designed to help accelerate the adoption of minimally invasive gynecology and ensure that women are aware of their surgical treatment options and the benefits of less invasive approaches. Some of the conditions that can benefit from minimally invasive treatment options include:
Investigation and treatment of pelvic pain,
Uterine fibroids,
Endometriosis,
Adenomyosis,
Abnormal uterine bleeding, and
Some conditions of infertility.

Minimally invasive treatment options include:
Hysterectomies,
Endometrial ablations, and
Removal of ovarian cysts.
