The 2025 Northern Indiana Boys and Girls Track and Field season is set to begin soon, with schools across Northern Indiana preparing for another competitive year.
The IHSAA sports calendar marks February 17 as the first official practice date, with the first contests scheduled for March 3. The Sectional meets will occur on May 22, and Regionals will occur on May 29, culminating in the State finals on June 6.
Andrean High School recently made headlines by announcing the return of Nolan Petties as its Boys Track and Field head coach. Petties, who previously led the 59ers from 2000 to 2005, is expected to bring experience and leadership to the program as it gears up for the 2025 season.
Merrillville High School will look to build on its success after claiming the IHSAA Crown Point Track and Field Sectional title in 2024. Crown Point’s standout athlete, high jumper Elisa Algozine, will aim for another strong season, while Highland long jumper Kennedy Stephens is also expected to make an impact.
Last year, Merrillville emerged victorious at the IHSAA Boys Track and Field Crown Point Sectional against a field that included Andrean High School, Crown Point High School, Hanover Central High School, Hobart High School, Lake Central High School, Thomas A. Edison High School, Lowell High School, River Forest High School, and others. At the IHSAA Boys Varsity Track Regionals hosted by Valparaiso, Crown Point took first place with 83 points, followed by Chesterton with 73 points, and Merrillville close behind with 70.5 points.
Lake Central enters the season with momentum, having won its 31st Sectional title last year led by Anastasia Thompson, who claimed victories in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. However, with both Thompson and Gary West Side’s Laya’Lapri Ratney, who finished fifth at State in the 100-meter hurdles in her first season, graduating last year, new contenders must rise. Who will step up this year?
Several schools will host key meets in Boys Track and Field competitions, including Andrean, Michigan City High School, Portage High School, Valparaiso, and South Bend John Adams High School. However, no updates or schedules have been posted for these schools.
As teams prepare for the upcoming season, top returning athletes like Crown Point’s Zachary Cooper, a standout in indoor competition, will be looking to make their mark. With a strong field of competitors and experienced coaches leading the way, the 2025 season in Northern Indiana will be another thrilling chapter in high school athletics.
There is plenty of promising talent among the growing number of athletes determined to make a name for themselves in the Region this season.
