Sports in Northern Indiana: A look ahead at the 2025 Girls Softball season

As the 2025 high school softball season approaches, Northwest Indiana teams are gearing up for another exciting year of competition. With returning powerhouses, rising young stars, and championship aspirations, fans can expect thrilling action on the diamond.

One dominant program, the Lake Central High School Indians, boasts a history of success and a strong returning core. Their pitching depth and offensive firepower make them a formidable opponent in every matchup. One key player, Madi Bickell, is a first baseman from Schererville. Bickell is a three-time Scholar-Athlete who will also be graduating with academic honors. She was a Sportsmanship Award recipient, earning academic and athletic letters.

Kate Renschen, another of Lake Central’s top players, broke the all-time single-season stolen base record with 25, beating her record of 23 from the previous year. Jolie Adams also made history last season, earning 175 career hits and becoming Lake Central’s all-time hit leader.

Lake Central's first game is at Munster High School at 5 p.m. on April 11. This matchup will be an early-season test for both teams, especially considering their history from last year. In the 2024 Sectional championship, Lake Central dominated Munster with a 10-1 victory, securing their spot in the Regional round. That loss still lingers for the Mustangs, and they will undoubtedly be looking for revenge this season.

The Munster Mustangs are a rising team in the Northwest Crossroads Conference. Munster has shown steady improvement and could be a sleeper team in 2025. They will start their season at the Southern Warrior Classic (A) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on March 25. Last season, they had an overall record of 21-11 (10-2 in conference play) and finished first in the Northwest Crossroads Conference.

The Duneland Athletic Conference is shaping up for an exciting season, with key teams like Andrean High School and Valparaiso High School looking to make an impact. Andrean, competing in Class 3A, consistently produces state-caliber teams thanks to solid coaching and a disciplined approach. The 59ers are poised for another strong season and will be a formidable force in the conference.

Crown Point High School enters the season as one of the top contenders in Class 4A. With a mix of experienced upper-level students and talented first-year students, the Bulldogs are expected to make another deep postseason run. One of their key players, Ashlyn Kita, is a junior, dynamic baseman, and utility player. Committed to DePaul University, Kita’s versatility and strong skill set make her a crucial asset for Crown Point this season.

Meanwhile, Valparaiso aims to improve in 2025 after finishing fifth in the conference last season. With a mix of experienced players and promising young talent, the Vikings are determined to climb the standings, starting with a challenging matchup against Penn High School at 5:30 p.m. on April 11.

Michiana softball will have a strong presence this year. Penn High School finished the 2024 season with an impressive 27-7 record and was ranked 11th in the state by MaxPreps.

One of the top players in the area is Berkley Zache, a senior from Saint Joseph High School. She is an Oklahoma University commit who was named to MaxPreps’ “Top 25 Class of 2025 Softball Players to Watch” list. In her best season (2023), Zache achieved an outstanding 16-1 pitching record, striking out 364 batters while maintaining a .531 batting average—an insane performance.

More players to watch for this season include Abriyah James, a left fielder from Monroeville’s Heritage High School who has committed to Ball State University. Known for her defensive versatility and offensive power, James is expected to be a key contributor to her team this season. Kaelynn Howell is a senior pitcher and infielder from South Bend who has committed to Maryland Eastern Shore. Howell possesses exceptional command on the mound and will play a crucial role in her team’s success. Both players have the skills and leadership set to make a significant impact this season.

As the season starts, there are several top games to watch. On April 1, Portage High School will face Washington Township High School as both teams look to start the season strong. On April 8, Andrean High School will play against Munster High School in a matchup that will test both teams’ depth and postseason potential. Crown Point High School will take on Lake Central High School on April 21. This will be a must-watch rivalry game that could have significant conference championship implications. Finally, La Porte High School will battle Michigan City High School on May 6. This matchup is sure to be an intense contest between two schools looking to establish dominance in their division.

For this softball season, expect standout performances, dramatic finishes, and intense rivalries as the season unfolds. High school softball continues to thrive in Northwest Indiana, and the 2025 season promises to be another fantastic chapter of great athletic history in the Region.
