“Spirit of Leadership” Award Presented to Dion Campbell

Dion-Campbell-Spirit-of-LeadershipLeadership La Porte County is pleased to honor Michigan City Police Department Det. Dion Campbell, with a “Spirit of Leadership” Award for his efforts in forming and conducting the first annual Michigan City Police Department Youth Leadership Academy. Campbell is a fourteen year veteran of the police department and a graduate of the Leadership LaPorte County 29th Adult Community Leadership training program.

The award was presented at the Leadership LaPorte County alumni and friends breakfast meeting, held September 11, 2013 at B & J’s American Café. Guest speaker for the event was former Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie, who shared insights from his leadership journey as a long time city planner, elected official and retired community leader.

The Youth Leadership Academy (YLA), a week long program to develop a platform for building leadership capacity in 40 diverse junior high students in Michigan City took place in June, 2013. The mission of YLA is to identify, develop and empower the next generation of servant leaders.

Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek stated, “Detective Dion Campbell continues to contribute to the youth in our community through his vision and leadership abilities. We recognize and value his compassion and leadership role in mentoring children. The majority of this is accomplished as he interacts with the children each week while serving as the school resource officer at the Michigan City High School. This past June during the charter class of the “youth leadership academy” his vision and mission to engage the children was successful and I sincerely appreciate his dedication not only to our department but most importantly to the youth in our community.”

Leadership LaPorte County’s President of the Board, Lance Werner added, "We are proud to honor alumni Dion Campbell and the Michigan City police department for their bold leadership initiative to make a positive difference in the lives of our youth.”
