South Central to Implement Delayed Start Wednesday

South Central Community School Corporation will be implementing a weekly delayed student start in the 2012-2013 school year. The delayed student schedule will allow teachers to participate in hour-long Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) each Wednesday morning. Student bus routes will be delayed by 30 minutes on Wednesday mornings to accommodate the delayed start of the student school day. Supervision will be available in the cafeteria beginning at 7:00 A.M. for students whose parents must drop them off before their bus arrives.

The extended PLC time will provide teachers time to examine and focus on the four questions that guide a true professional learning community:

· What do we want children to know?

· How will we know when they know it?

· What can we do when they don’t get it?

· How can we extend learning when they do get it?

Additionally, teachers will spend PLC time working collaboratively to promote and develop learning among all students by implementing and expanding intervention programs to help struggling students. Teachers will also collaborate to develop instruction based upon the new Common Core Standards and nation-wide standardized exams that will be mandated by the Indiana Department of Education. PLC time will also be used by teachers to problem-solve issues in collaboratively, to develop school goals to promote constant and continual improvement, and to analyze student data to ensure that all students’ needs are met in the classroom.
