Sleep Easier, Sleep Wiser

sleep bannerSleep, like food and water, is essential to our bodies. Without it, we’ll be in more than a little trouble. And also like food and water, when we don’t get adequate amounts or it’s not good quality, our bodies will suffer.

So what do those who suffer from sleep disorders do? Where do they go to get their slumber in sync? They go to the Sleep Diagnostics Lab at Community Hospital in Munster.

The Sleep Diagnostics Lab at Community Hospital is one of multiple labs that are within Community Healthcare System. David S. Rozenfeld, M.D. is the medical director of Sleep Diagnostics at Community Hospital and St. Catherine Hospital. He and the team at the lab is highly experienced and they work with each of their patients individually to get to the root of their sleep situation.

"Most people come to the sleep lab because they don’t sleep well at night or they are sleepy during the day," Dr. Rozenfeld said. "If you want to know what’s going on you have to see what happens at night. We have patients stay the night and we moniter their brain activity, limb movements, breathing, heart rate. We are able to diagnose multiple disorders this way."

A polysomnography (PSG) evaluation is conducted in the lab. The patient is set up in a comfortable room with all the amenities that they would have if they were in his or her own home. A technician attaches electrodes, sensors, and a microphone to the patient and moniters them while they sleep. The procedure is painless and noninvasive, and a lot can be uncovered from it.

Home sleep studies are also available for those who wish to stay in the comfort of their own home.

"After we make diagnosis we provide the proper treatments to fix the problem," Dr. Rosenfeld said. "We don't do surgery. If that is required to help a patient then we refer them to the correct surgeon."

The Sleep Diagnostics lab is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep medicine and it is equipted to treat a wide range of sleep disorders including:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Sleep apnea
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Circadian rhythm disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Narcolepsy
  • Parasomnias
  • Periodic limb movement disorder

"We do better than most sleep labs out there," Dr. Rozenfeld said. "Most sleep labs will only test for sleep apnea and if that's not the issue they won't pursue it further. We are much more comprehensive then that.

Dr. Rozenfeld and his team spend their waking moments making sure that those in their care can get the most from their sleeping moments. Knowing that he and others on his staff are helping people everyday helps him to sleep better at night.

"If we are able to help people they can get their lives back together. Sleep affects their work, families, and health," Dr. Rozenfeld said. "What I get to do is rewarding. It makes everything worthwhile when someone comes back with a smile and they say they feel so much better."
