Shakin’ Their Way Towards Health

It started out just like any other meeting -the members of La Porte High School Girl Reserves huddled into the school cafeteria for a basic run down on events, community service, and club news. They started the meeting with the pledge of allegiance followed by the G.R. creed. However, if one looked close they could tell this was not an ordinary meeting.

The girls sat waiting in their chairs dressed in colorful sneakers and headbands. When the meeting was adjourned the girls did not immediately head to their cars, but ran to the school’s commons for a special Zumba party!

Club sponsor Ingrid Voelker said, “The dance is over but the party continues! We want to keep the club’s enthusiasm going strong!”

For one hour the girls danced to upbeat hits led by instructor Kristi Watkins of Curves and The Crossing. The combination of modern moves and aerobic moves with a Latin infusion made for fast-paced workout.

Member Abby Witherow, while pausing for a water break, explained, “Zumba is so much fun! I am not a great dancer, but I love going out there and pretending like I am. It is a great workout.”

The purpose of the evening was not just to get the girls pumping and shaking, but to bring the club closer together and break the barrier of self-consciousness.

“This completely brought us together as a G.R. family in a fun and exciting way. The group was able to form new bonds in a care-free environment,” Danielle Plank observed.

Even though the dancers were working up a sweat, there was laughter, singing, and shouts of joy. When the final song was called the girls were left wanting more and even suggested doing Zumba at each meeting.

After the evening, Kayla Dunbar commented, “This was just incredible. Our instructor was bursting with energy. I think this really taught everyone about keeping fit, having fun, being confident, and enjoying life. What could be better?”

Girl Reserves is shaking things up even more. Next year high school aged girls in the La Porte School District who are home-schooled will be allowed to participate in G.R. On top of their Zumba party, the members continue to volunteer in the community and promote a positive lifestyle for women.
