Purdue University Northwest’s (PNW) College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences welcomes Dr. Ruth Gomberg-Muñoz of Loyola University Chicago as part of their Distinguished Speaker Series. Gomberg-Muñoz will present, “Deported but Not Defeated in Mexico City.”
“Deported but Not Defeated in Mexico City” Gomberg-Munoz, who is currently studying the activities of deportees’ rights organizers in Mexico City, expressed concern about the treatment of Mexican citizens after they have been deported from the United States. Gomberg-Muñoz states, “In 2016 alone, nearly 300,000 Mexican citizens were removed or returned from the United States. …Deportees often arrive in Mexico only to discover that they have gone from noncitizens in the United States to ‘abandoned citizens’ in Mexico who are denied recognition and support from the Mexican government.”
