Salvation Army of Michigan City Holds First Youth Photography Contest to Support World Missions

Salvation-Army-MC-Youth-Photo-Contest-Winner-2016When you give teenagers a camera and ask them to photograph their world, the results can be astounding. Michigan City found that out first hand when the youth group of The Salvation Army showed off their photography skills last Sunday in a fundraiser for their World Missions programs. 41 numbered and anonymous photographs (and a couple of sketches) were put on display with red kettles, and guests gave monetary donations into the kettle of their favorite photograph. The picture with the highest donation was declared the winner, and the owner was presented with a Canon Camera as a prize. This years winner was Kevin Alejo, who is an active member of the youth group.

Monies raised from this event go toward reaching their annual goal for The Salvation Army’s World Missions fund, which goes to support mission teams in their effort to bring clean water, schooling, and clean living conditions internationally. Our youth group raised close to $400 for this first time event, which will be stretched even further thanks to a matching grant from the greater Salvation Army.

“I was excited for our youth to help give back in such a creative way. It was a humbling experience for them to understand that there are children in the world who do not have clean, running water or a roof over their head.” said Lieutenant Bill Brutto. “We were really pleased with the quality of their work, and the time they out into this event.”
