Runnin’ for Prestin Race

Ro-PrestingThe Runnin' for Prestin 5k run/walk that was held in Washington Park on September 21st. The run was in honor of Prestin Butcher, a 12 year old La Porte boy who was diagnosed at the age of 10 with medulloblastoma (an aggressive type of brain cancer). While he has been 'cancer free' for one year (his anniversary was 9.13), he is not done fighting this cancer. He has to go for checks every 3 months to make sure this aggressive cancer has not returned.

The run raised over $6000. The proceeds from the run are being donated to Dr. Shih at Riley's Hospital for pediatric cancer research. Pediatric cancer is the least funded cancer researched in the United States. The race shirts showed a gold ribbon with running shoes that said "Runnin' for Prestin and all kids." It also showed the numbers 46/7. 46 is the number of children diagnosed daily in the US with cancer and 7 is for the number of children who die daily. Over 160 participants ran or walked and over 50 volunteers helped at the event and behind the scenes.

The highlight of the run was Prestin himself. While last year, he could only watch the run from his wheelchair, this year he was determined to participate. He walked the 3.1 miles with his dad. When Prestin got tired, his dad lovingly put Prestin on his back and carried him. Prestin was determined to run the last .1 leg of the race and finished with a smile on his face and holding his dad's hand. His positive attitude is an inspiration to all.

The 3rd annual run is tentatively scheduled for 9.13.14 which will, with God's grace, mark Prestin's 2nd year of being cancer free. The proceeds again will benefit pediatric cancer research at Riley's Hospital. Donations are still being accepted and can be made payable to Prestin's Fight c/0 Chris or Brad Kiser 6666 W.
