Downtown La Porte came together on Friday, June 7th, to host a classic car show and movie night. This family-friendly night marked the beginning of a weekly event throughout the summer. Starting at 6:00, the evening revved up with a classic car show. While listening to vintage tunes, families perused the area checking out all of the vintage hot rods.
Bill Waelbroeck, owner of a 1987 Corvette said, “I have always been into cars. I retired, and I wanted a little toy. It’s nice because on the weekends you can go to different places and stuff. It is a novelty.”
When dusk arrived the attention shifted to the classic film Charlotte’s Web sponsored by Parkison and Hinton. During the movie, family and friends munched on free popcorn donated by the La Porte Savings Bank. Community involvement stretched even further with food available for purchase from B & J’s American Café and delectable ice cream from Temple News Agency. The audience followed the journey of Wilbur the pig while snuggled up on lawn chairs and blankets under the stars-a magical way to begin the summer.
Downtown Director for City of La Porte said, “The First Friday Night Movie has been a longstanding tradition in Downtown La Porte that I am happy to help continue. The urban setting, adjacent classic car show before the movie, free popcorn by La Porte Savings Bank and food for sale by B & J’s American Café and other adjacent eateries make this a fun event for the whole family.”
Friday at the Movies and Car Show will continue throughout the summer at Monroe and State Street in the Herald Argus parking lot. The next movie night will be on July 5th with a showing of the beloved Dr. Seuss classic, The Lorax. The final event of the summer will take place on August 2nd where the featured film will be the adventure flick Journey to the Center of the Earth.
