READ La Porte County, Inc.’s 2014 Scrabble Tournament Was a Success!

READ_La_Porte_County__Inc_s_2014_Scrabb-1On September 25, 2014, READ La Porte County, Inc. held its annual Scrabble Tournament at the Best Western Plus La Porte Hotel & Conference Center. This year's successful event nearly sold out, with a total of 36 teams in attendance!

The Honorable Steven King served as judge at the event. Tournament winners were as follows:

1st Place: David Wittchen and Pat Tucker
2nd Place: Jane Spirgel and Chris Perry
3rd Place: Connie Conjalka and Jane Wickstrom

High Word Score: Jane Spirgel and Chris Perry

READ thanks its tournament sponsors, which include "Q" level supporter American Licorice Company; "X" level supporters IU Health La Porte Hospital, Christa Pinkepank and United Way of La Porte County; "K" level supporters Centier Bank, Jeff and Dawn Dunifon, Kingsbury Elevator, Inc., La Porte Savings Bank, Valerie Martinsen, DDS, Michiana Antique Auto Club and Women in Leadership La Porte County; and other sponsors The Floor Store and Barry Krodel.

Prizes and favors were donated by Best Western Plus La Porte Hotel & Conference Center, Mary Kay Budak, Cannon's Automotive, Peggy Cunningham, Downtown La Porte, Fannie May Confections, Mary Fridh, Greg Fruth, Jimmy John's, LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau, LaPorte Seamless Gutter, Debe Meyer, Christa Pinkepank, Cathy Schadowsky and Connie Shei.

Tournament proceeds will benefit READ La Porte County, Inc., a United Way agency with a mission to increase the reading, math, English and digital literacy skills in our community. READ offers free tutoring to children, adult learners and individuals who are learning English as a second language. Tutoring takes place at the library, in area schools and at the Community Corrections Center. Last year, READ saw a total of 237 students from ages 6 to 66 take advantage of its programs.
