Freshman Lauren Bailey led the way for the Purdue Northwest women's golf team on Day 1 of the Governors State Invitational, carding a team-best 81 to stand fifth overall Thursday at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course.

Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) joined freshmen teammates Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) and Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) as the first women to compete collegiately for Purdue Northwest, which introduced its women's golf program this season.

Spalla carded a 90 and Smith tallied an 93 to round out the Pride scores.

Bailey stands six strokes off the leader, St. Xavier's Taylor Thompson, who shot a 75 Thursday.

PNW returns to action Friday to complete the two-day tournament, teeing off at 9 a.m. CT at Crete's Balmoral Woods Country Club.

Patrick Mudd Cards School Record; PNW Men First After Day 1
Patrick Mudd carded a school-record low score to lead the field and teammate Ryan Wells stood second overall after Day 1 of the Governors State Invitational Thursday, as the Purdue Northwest Gold Team finished in first place with 18 holes yet to play.

The PNW Gold Team recorded a program-record of its own, firing a 294 to stand first among the 10-team field.

Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) shot a program-record 67 - his first collegiate score to break 70 - to stand 4-under-par on the Par 71 course at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course in Crete, Ill. Sophomore teammate Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central), competing on the PNW Black team, wasn't far behind, shooting 1-under-par with a 70 to stand in the runner-up position in the individual standings.

Contributing to the PNW Gold Team's record score were freshman Aaron Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City), who recorded a 74, freshman Brian Brzycki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith)with a 75 and Payton Smith (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) with a 78. Sophomore Leo Govert (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) also finished below 80, carding a 79.

Senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) was an additional standout on the PNW Black Team, shooting Purdue Northwest's fourth-best score of the day with a 76.

The Pride return to action to complete the two-day tournament Friday, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Crete's Balmoral Woods Country Club.
