PNW-Purdue-Northwest-Sweeps-Indiana-Northwest-3-0Purdue Northwest Sweeps Indiana Northwest, 3-0 The Purdue University Northwest volleyball team picked up a nonleague road victory over Indiana Northwest in Wednesday’s three-game sweep at IUN’s Savannah Center.

The Pride (10-9) defeated the RedHawks (12-17) by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 to complete the two-series sweep over IUN, after recording a 3-0 win back in Hammond on Sept. 6.

PNW junior Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) once again led the Pride offense, recording 15 kills on a .306 attack percentage.

Freshman setter Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) added 25 assists and led the team in digs with 12, tied with teammate Eudora Negri (Munster, Ind./Munster).

PNW recorded seven total blocks to just three for IUN, led by Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) with five block assists and Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) with four. The Pride hit .239 for the match compared to .101 for IUN.

Indiana Northwest nearly pulled off a Set 3 victory – leading by a margin of 23-19 – but Ahrens’ serving led a Pride comeback, as the freshman serviced five straight points – and Pasko had the final two kills – to seal the match.

Tori Gardenhire led the RedHawks with seven kills, Caityln Machura had 14 assists and Jade Mulvaney eight digs in the setback.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Friday, Oct. 6, when the Pride kick off the two-day Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference crossover tournament hosted by Robert Morris Illinois in Chicago.

PNW will face off with host Robert Morris Friday at 7 p.m. CT followed by contests Saturday against St. Xavier (10 a.m.) and St. Ambrose (noon).

Purdue Northwest Defeats St. Francis Behind Second-Half Surge After trailing 1-0 early on in the second half, the Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer battled back to even the score, before connecting on a game-winning penalty kick in the 73rd minute to give the Pride a 2-1 victory over St. Francis (Ill.) Wednesday.

The Pride (4-4-3, 2-1-2 CCAC) defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Francis (1-9, 0-6 CCAC) for the fourth straight time in as many seasons.

After a scoreless first half, the Fighting Saints connected on the first goal of the match on a goal from Leon Laskowski to put USF up 1-0.

Purdue Northwest would answer quickly, after a pass from Jaime Garcia (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) led freshman Michael Brownsea (Albury, Austrailia/Albury) to notch his first goal of the season and even the score at 1-1.

In the 73rd minute, the Black and Gold pushed toward USF’s goal to try and take the lead, when the Fighting Saints committed a foul in the penalty box to give the Pride a prime opportunity.

Djordje Cancarevic (Painesville, Ohio/Chippewa) would take the penalty kick and find the back of the net for his third goal of the season, which proved to be the game winner for the Black and gold.

Jonathan Lozano (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) earned the victory in his first game in goal this season, recording five saves in 90 minutes of play.

Alec Guarino (Saint John, Ind./Marian Catholic) led the Pride with three total shots, while Francisco Torres (East Chicago, Ind./East Chicago Central) recorded two shots, both on goal.

PNW returns to action Saturday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Elgin, Ill. for a CCAC matchup with Judson University at 2:30 p.m.

Purdue Northwest Tops Indiana South Bend in Four-Set Thriller In a four-set thriller, the Purdue University Northwest volleyball team took down visiting Indiana South Bend University 3-1 in Tuesday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup at the James B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Complex.

The Pride (9-9, 3-3) won by scores of 29-27, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18 to capture its third conference victory over the visiting Titans (9-11, 3-4) of South Bend.

Junior Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) led the offense with 14 kills, senior Cami Webster (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) added nine kills and sophomore Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) had eight kills. Freshman setter Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) dished out 37 assist and three players had double-digit digs, led by libero Casey Neulieb (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) with 18, Ahrens with 14 and Pasko with 12.

PNW’s defense at the net shined Tuesday, as the Pride recorded a season-high 15 total blocks, led by freshman Auburn Dodd’s (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) eight block assists and seven more from Ahrens and junior Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County).

Purdue Northwest took an early two-set lead after capturing a wild Set 1, 29-27. With the match tied at 27-all, Martin’s kill was followed by two straight points by Ahrens after two IUSB errors to put PNW ahead, 1-0. After taking the second set, IUSB battled back to take Game 3, jumping out to a 19-8 lead.

The Pride didn’t quit though, scoring five straight points to keep the third game close before the Titans were able to pull away.

Game 4 proved to be a back-and-forth match, with the score standing tied at 16-all before PNW was able to gain some distance late. Two kills by Dodd and Webster ended the game — with help from stellar serving from sophomores Kyle Tincher (Sellersburg, Ind./Rock Creek) and Abbe Mullen (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South), who scored four points and five points, respectively.

Ashley McClintock led the Titans with 14 kills, Leah Wimmer had 38 assists and Sierra Conklin had 24 digs in the setback.

PNW returns to action Wednesday when the Pride travel to Gary, Ind., for a non league contest at Indiana Northwest.
