PNW-Cordova-Leads-PNW-Men-to-Top-Half-Finish-in-LouisvilleSal Cordova Leads PNW Men to Top Half Finish in Louisville Behind a host of personal-bests, the Purdue University Northwest men’s cross country team placed 21st out of the field of 43 teams Saturday afternoon at the Greater Louisville Classic.

PNW junior Salvador Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) finished just 6 seconds off his career-best 8-kilometer time, recording a mark of 26 minutes, 37 seconds, good for 77th overall out of 388 runners.

Cordova registered the best 8K time of the season for the men’s team and the seventh best-time ever in PNW history.

Senior Alex Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) finished second for the Black and Gold, placing 98th with a time of 26:57, while freshman Chris Ramos (Hobart, Ind./River Forest) notched a career-best time of 27:24.

Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) finished with the fourth best time for the Black and Gold with a time of 28:49, and Robert Corning finished fifth, earning a career-best time of 29:02.

Mark Peters (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and Brett Richardson (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) also recorded PR’s, with Peters recording a time of 30:15 and Richardson finishing just behind him at 30:18.

Senior Dustin Pluard (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) earned a career-best time of 32:36 and Martin Estrada (Gary, Ind./Lowell) also notched a PR with a time of 32:51.

North Central (Ill.) took home the team title with 26 total points led by overall medalist Zach Plank, who ran a time of 24:53.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Friday, October 7, when the Pride travel to Mishawaka, Ind., for the Bethel Pilot Invitational starting at 4:45 p.m.

Mudd, Skibinski Lead Purdue Northwest at Bethel Final Round Patrick Mudd and Aaron Skibinski both had stellar final rounds to the lead the Purdue University Northwest men’s golf team to an seventh-place finish at the Bethel Pilot Invitational Saturday.

Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) shot a Day 2 71 – one stroke off his career-best and tied for the third-best 18-hole round in school history – to place fourth (147, +3) overall for the Pride, who shot a two-day round of 616 at Blackthorn Golf Club.

Mudd’s 36-hole round of 147 tied his career best and stands second-best in program history, and he improved 14 spots from Friday, when he shot a 76 and stood tied for 17th.

Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City), a freshman, recorded the best round of his young career with Saturday’s 74, which stands in the top six scores in program history. His two-day score of 154 placed him tied for 22nd overall in the field of 61.

PNW sophomore Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) finished tied for 31 with his two-day score of 156 after carding an 82 Saturday, and freshman Bryan Bryzcki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) rounded out the Pride scoring with a 159, after shooting a 79 in the final round.

Taylor won the team title with its two-day score of 583, St. Francis (Ind.) was second (603) and Olivet Nazarene third with a 609.

Nick Waskom of Taylor maintained his Day 1 lead to take medalist honors, recording a 71 Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 140.

PNW returns to action Monday when they compete in the single-day Trinity Christian Fall Invite held in Homewood, Ill.

Werner Leads Way for Purdue Northwest XC in Louisville Purdue University Northwest sophomore Kyleigh Warner led the way for the Pride women’s cross country team at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday afternoon at Tom Sawyer State Park.

Werner (Westville, Ind./South Central) finished 113th with a 6-kilometer time of 24 minutes, 18 seconds, out of the field of 332 to lead the Black and Gold to a 29th place finish in the 39-team race with 872 total points.

Sophomore Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) finished second for the Pride, recording a career-best time of 25:16 while classmate Sara Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) finished just behind her teammate with a time of 25:48.

Junior Shyla Huppenthal (Boulder, Colo./Northglenn) also registered a career-best time of 29:39 and sophomore Abigail Bondi (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) rounded out the Black and Gold runners with a time of 31:54.

Hope College went on to win the highly competitive race with 103 points total, while Amy Reagan from Stevens Institute placed first overall with a time of 20:55.

Bailey Leads Purdue Northwest on Final Day at Bethel Invite Freshman Lauren Bailey shaved 14 strokes off her Round 1 score to lead the Purdue University Northwest women’s golf team at Saturday’s final round of the Bethel Pilot Invitational.

Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) recorded a Day 2 82 to finish with a two-day score of 178 to place tied for 34th overall in the field of 55 at South Bend’s Blackthorn Golf Club. Overall, the Pride improved by 35 strokes from its Day 1 round to shoot a 423 Saturday and finish with a 36-hole round score of 881 to place 11th in the team standings.

PNW freshman Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) recorded a 99 Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 193, good for tied for 46th place, and classmate Meghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point cut 17 strokes off her Day 1 score to finish with a 36-hole round of 217 (53rd).

Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) rounded out PNW’s scoring with a 293.

St. Francis (Ind.) won the team title with a two-day score of 634, edging host and runner-up Bethel (639). Indiana Wesleyan was third with a 655.

USF’s Marissa Singer took medalist honors, shooting a 76 Saturday to finish with a 154.

PNW returns to action Monday when the Pride compete in the single-day Trinity Christian Fall Invite in Homewood, Ill.

Purdue Northwest Drops Decision to Bethel The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped a nonleague decision to Bethel College Saturday afternoon.

The Pride (0-1) lost to the Pilots (8-5), 9-0, at MatchPoint Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Ind.

Junior Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) fought hard in a loss in No. 1 singles to Bethel's Taylor Freedline, 6-0, 6-4.

Kvachkoff and sophomore Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) were able to win two games at No. 1 doubles before BC's Freedline and Caroline Boger took control in an 8-2 victory for the visitors.

Selina Baez (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) and Tatiana Spak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) picked up two games in No. 2 doubles before BC's Chase Kieper and Adrianna Ward were able to rally and win, 8-2.

PNW will return to action for their spring season on Feb. 3 as the Pride take on Concordia University at MatchPoint at 4 p.m.

Purdue Northwest Tops Bethel, 5-4 The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team picked up its second straight victory to start the season as the Pride defeated the Bethel College Pilots on Saturday.

The Pride (2-0) defeated the Pilots (2-10), 5-4, at MatchPoint Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Ind.

Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Ronald Reagan) picked up his second straight victory in No. 2 singles against Bethel's Jose Morales, 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany/International School on the Rhine) picked up the win in a close match at No. 1 singles, defeating Jacob Macri from the Pilots, 7-6. 7-6.

Sophomore Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Bilingue Nuevo Mundo) fought hard in No. 3 singles to force a third set against BU's Matt Kempf before Kempf pulled away to win in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

Gisy and Villacres came back to win in No. 1 doubles against BC's Jacob Macri and Matt Kempf, 8-0.

Pimentel was able to rebound and teamed up with freshman Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) to defeat Brad Foster and Luke Prude from Bethel in No. 2 doubles, 8-6.

Freshman John Mamelson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) joined James Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Oak Forest) in No. 3 doubles to defeat Bobby Eberle and Brian Shembarger, 8-6.

The Pride conclude their fall season in 2016 with a 2-0 record, as the Pride return to action for the spring season on Saturday, Feb. 4, as they host Concordia University at MatchPoint.

Purdue Northwest Drops Pair to Taylor Saturday The Purdue University Northwest volleyball team fell to Taylor University in Saturday’s doubleheader at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

The Pride (8-9) fell to the Trojans (12-8) in the first match of the day, with scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-23, before sustaining another setback in Match 2, 25-20, 25-8, 25-14.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 4, when the Pride host Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent IU South Bend at 7 p.m. At the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex in Westville, Ind.

Match 1: Purdue Northwest 0, Taylor 3

Cami Webster (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and Gabrielle Martin (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) led the way for the Black and Gold, each recording double-doubles.

Martin notched a team-high 11 kills and tallied 11 digs while Webster recorded 10 kills and 10 digs with a .308 attack percentage.

Sophomore Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) led the Pride with 18 digs and Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) recorded a team-high 34 assists and registered eight digs in the setback.

Sophomore libero Casey Neulieb (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) added 18 digs for the defense.

Taylor took an early 8-6 lead to start off the opening set, but the Pride would even the score at 11-11, thanks to a kill from Webster.

The Trojans would take back the lead, and hold on to their advantage for the rest of Set 1 to come away with the 25-17 win.

PNW would trail in the second set 11-6, but would make a nice comeback to put themselves within two, 15-13.

Taylor would go on a run of its own and eventually take Set 2, 25-18.

The third and final set was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams being knotted at 15-15.

The Pride would go on a 5-1 run led by Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) to go up 20-16, but the Trojans would come back to tie the set at 23-23, before winning 25-23 in the final set of the match.

Taylor was led by Kelly Arnold and Becca Gerig who each tallied 11 kills while Haley Harrell notched 28 assists.

Match 2: Purdue Northwest 0, Taylor 3

Asya Hoobs (Lynwood, Ill./Bishop Noll) and Olivia Simpson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) each led the Pride with eight kills each in the final match of the day.

Junior Abbe Mullen (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) tallied a team-high 22 assists while senior Kenyatta Scales (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) led the team with 10 digs to round out the PNW leaders.

After Taylor took a 13-7 lead early in Set 1, the Pride would fight back to get within two points, after a block from Darya Maroz (Minsk Belarus/Kletskya) and Hannah Thomas (Frankton, Ind./Frankton) made it 16-14.

The Trojans would answer back though to take the opening set 25-20.

Taylor would win the second set, 25-8, before taking a 10-4 lead in the final set.

They carried that momentum for the remainder of the match to win 25-14 and come away with the three-set win.

Smith Leads PNW Women's Golf on Day 1 at Bethel Purdue University Northwest freshman Darian Smith led the Pride women’s golf team with a Round 1 score of 94 at the Bethel Pilot Invitational held at Black Thorn Golf Club.

Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) stood tied for 37th after 18 holes, as Purdue Northwest placed 11th with a score of 458.

Freshman Lauren Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) was next for PNW, two strokes back from Smith with a 96 in 44th place and classmate Meghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Pint) shot a 117, good for 54th.

Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) rounded out PNW’s scoring with a first-round 151.

St. Francis (Ind.) led the team field with a score of 315, Bethel’s A team was three strokes back with a 318 and Olivet Nazarene stood third with a 321.

ONU’s Kayla Owens led the field with a first-round 74.

Purdue Northwest resumes action in Saturday’s final round beginning at 8 a.m.

Wells, Mudd Lead Purdue Northwest on Day 1 at Pilot Invite Ryan Wells and Patrick Mudd recorded scores in the 70s to lead the Purdue University Northwest men’s golf team on Day 1 of the Bethel Pilot Invitational Friday at Black Thorn Golf Course.

Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central), a sophomore, scored a 74 (+2) and senior Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was two strokes back with a 76 (+4) to lead the way for the Pride, who stood in seventh place in the 11-team event with a team round of 310.

Freshmen Brian Bryzcki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) and Aaron Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) tied with 80s to round out the team scoring, and PNW junior Josh Jackowski (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) was fifth on thhe squad with an 81.

Taylor stood first in the team standings 20 strokes back with a 290, St. Francis (Ind.) was third (298) and Holy Cross third (303) after 18 holes of play.

Taylor’s Nick Waskom led the field on Day 1, shooting a field-low 69.

The final round kicks off Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
