PNW-mens-soccer-defeats-Judson-2-0 PNW Men's Soccer Defeats Judson 2-0 The Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team picked up their second straight victory as the Pride defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Judson University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.

The Pride (5-4-3, 3-1-2 CCAC) scored first early in the match in the third minute as Alec Guarino (Saint John, Ind./Marian Catholic) received a cross from Chris Rassel (Saint John, Ind./Lake Central) for Guarino’s fifth goal of the season.

JU would have another shot attempt in the 25th minute by Randy Lavaire but Jonathan Lozano (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) was right there for the save as PNW went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

The Pride would extend the lead to 2-0 in the second half as Djorde Cancarevic (Painesville, Ohio/Chippewa) scored on a penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season in the 74th minute after JU’s Jesus Fernandez picked up a yellow card.

PNW held the Eagles off the scoreboard the rest of the way as the Pride allowed only six shots with one being on goal to come up with the 2-0 victory.

JU had more shot opportunity late in the second half but was unable to capitalize for a goal, as Victor Piccirollo had a shot that went wide in the 85th minute.

The Pride had 10 total shots in the match with four being on goal.

Lozano picked up his second straight victory and his first shutout of the season for the Pride.

PNW returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 11 as the Pride take on the Cardinal Stritch Wolves at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.

PNW Defeats St. Xavier; Splits Final Day of CCAC Crossover The Purdue University Northwest volleyball team split the final day of the CCAC Crossover tournament Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Xavier in Game 1 before falling to St. Ambrose in Game 2.

The Pride (12-10, 5-4) picked up the three-set sweep over the Cougars, with scores of 25-21, 28-26, and 25-22.

Purdue Northwest 3, St. Xavier 0 After taking a 14-8 lead to start off the opening set, the Pride would extend their lead to 17-8 thanks to three straight service aces from freshman Eudora Negri (Munster, Ind./Munster)

The Pride would hold on for the rest of the set, after a kill from Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) gave the Pride a 25-21 win in Set 1.

The Cougars would take a three point lead midway through the second set, going up 18-15 thanks to back-to-back kills from Natalie Carberry.

PNW would answer back with a 5-0 run to take a 20-18 lead, but SXU would counter to even the score at 22-22.

Both teams would continue to trade points, after Helena Atton evened the score at 26-26.

A service error from the Cougars followed by a kill from Cami Webster (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) would give the Pride the 28-26 win and take a two-set advantage.

SXU would take another lead midway through the third set, taking a 15-13 advantage, before the Pride fought back yet again to take back the lead, 20-18 on a kill by Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F.South)

PNW would finish strong and come away with the sweep, after defeating the Cougars 25-22 in Set 3.

Pasko led the Pride with 11 kills and 10 digs while Webster recorded 10 kills and a .429 attack percentage.

Freshman Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) would register 32 assists to go along with six kills while Casey Neulieb (Michigan City, Michigan City) notched 14 digs to headline the leaders for the Pride.

Purdue Northwest 0, St. Ambrose 3 St. Ambrose would take a big lead in the opening set, going up 20-13, but the Pride would fight back to cut their deficit to three, 21-18, thanks to a kill from Martin.

The Fighting Bees would stop any comeback efforts from the Pride and come away with the 25-20 Set 1 win.

SAU would take a 15-10 advantage to kick off Set 2, but the Pride would answer on a 5-0 run capped by a kill from Ahrens to even the score at 15-15.

The Score would stay tied through 20-20, but the Fighting Bees would hold on to win Set 2, 25-23.

SAU would keep that momentum and roll it in to the final set to defeat the Pride 25-18 and come way with the match victory.

Martin led the Pride with 13 kills and a .243 attack percentage while Ahrens tallied a team-high 28 assists.

Neulieb would register 11 digs and Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) would notch three block assists to round out the Pride leaders

The Pride return to action Thrusday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Bourbonnais, Ill. to face off with Olivet Nazarene in a CCAC contest starting at 7 p.m.

Women's Soccer Defeats Judson in CCAC Contest Saturday The Purdue University Northwest women’s soccer team won their second straight Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference match as the Pride defeated the Judson Eagles, 2-1, Saturday at Dawson Field.

The Pride (4-7, 2-4 CCAC) struck first in the 13th minute off a deflection from the goalkeeper as Marisa Jayne (Hartland, Mich./Hartland scored her first career goal.

JU’s Haley Coor had a chance to tie the match in the 43rd minute but missed wide right before half as PNW took a 1-0 lead going into the break.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard early in the second half as the Judson tied the match up with a goal by Alyssa Moreno in the 46th minute from the right side of the box from 30 yards out.

Junior Shayla McNeal (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) scored her sixth goal of the season, and what would be the game-winning goal in the 64th minute, after a shot from five yards out from the side of the box found the back of the net to give the Pride the 2-1 lead.

PNW’s defense would hold the Eagles scoreless for the rest of the game to seal the win for the Pride. The Pride's defense was strong all day, allowing only five shots with two on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lucie Ashmore (Greystones, Ireland/St. Gerald’s School) picked up her fourth win in goal this season for the Pride as she allowed only one goal in the match.

PNW returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 12 as the Pride take on CCAC foe Cardinal Stritch at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field starting at 3 p.m.

PNW Baseball Defeats Lincoln Christian in DH Saturday The Purdue University Northwest baseball team used strong pitching performances backed by a powerful offense to come away with a pair of wins over Lincoln Christian Saturday afternoon. The Pride (2-0) kicked off its 2016-17 campaign in style, defeating the Red Lions (0-5) in the first game of the double-header 11-0, before coming away with the 12-1 victory in Game 2.

Game 1: Purdue Northwest 11, Lincoln Christian 0 Freshman pitcher Jordan Petty led the way for the Black and Gold on the mound in his first appearance for the Pride.

Petty finished with 12 strikeouts and pitched four innings of no-hit ball before allowing his first hit in the top of the fifth to Ted Lingle.

Junior hurler Jimmy Skiff would come in relief for Petty in the top half of the fifth, and would finish the game with five strikeouts to complete the combined one-hit shutout.

After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Purdue Northwest would put up a 6-run second inning, which started after a Mike Mikulich single brought in Andrew Atchison and Evan Bloomfield.

The Red Lions would help out the Black and Gold with some fielding miscues, followed by an RBI-single from Austin Kordik which put PNW up 4-0.

Senior Tyler Crussen would keep the inning alive with a single that eventually brought in Kordik, followed by an RBI-single from Jake Lindeman, which brought in Crussen to cap off the 6-run second.

The Pride would tack on six more runs throughout the rest of the game to come away with the 12-0 victory.

Kordik, Lindeman, Bloomfield, Atchison, and Mikulich all led the Black and gold with two hits apiece, while Crussen and Larry Crisler each recorded hits for the Pride.

Game 2: Purdue Northwest 12, Lincoln Christian 1 The second game was much like the first, with Purdue Northwest scoring the bulk of their runs in the second inning.

Mikulich would start things off with an RBI-double, followed by an RBI-single from Jonny Albers to give the Pride an early 2-0 advantage.

After Alex Batistatos scored on a wild pitch, Kordik would drive in Zac Hernandez to extend their lead to four runs.

PNW capped off its 8-0 run with a two-run inside the park home run from Crisler which scored Lindeman.

The Red Lions would score their first run of the day in the top of the sixth inning, after Brock Trexler brought in Lance Warner to make it 11-1 in favor of the Pride.

Alec Skalka would connect on the second inside the park home run of the game, scoring the final run for the Pride and helping seal the 12-1 victory.

Junior Willie Bennett captured his first win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out three in four innings of work.

Brody Kutch would come in relief and throw two innings striking out two while Fabian DelReal finished the game off with one strike out and allowing one hit.

Purdue Northwest Sweeps Robert Morris in Opening Game of CCAC Crossover The Purdue University Northwest volleyball team captured a 3-0 victory over Robert Morris Friday night in the opening game of the RMU Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference crossover tournament.

PNW (11-9, 4-3 CCAC) defeated the Eagles (2-17, 0-7) by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-22 to pick up their 11th win of the year and third-straight.

PNW was led by Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) who registered a team-high 17 kills with a .311 attack percentage while Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) and Cami Webster (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) each tallied six kills.

Freshman Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) notched 34 assists and Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) recorded 26 digs to headline the PNW leaders.

After both teams were even at the start of Set 1 at 16-16, the Pride would fight to get the lead at 21-19, before rattling off a three point run late in the set to help propel them to a 25-21 win.

The Pride would take the second set 25-20, and carry that momentum in to the final set, taking an 11-5 advantage early on in Set 3.

Robert Morris would attempt a late-set comeback effort, rallying back to get within one, 22-21.

Purdue Northwest would stay strong and hold off the Eagles, after a kill from Martin gave the Pride a 25-22 win and cap off the sweep over RMU.

The Black and Gold will look to add on to their three-game winning streak Saturday, when the Pride take on Saint Xavier at 10 a.m. and St. Ambrose at noon to cap off the CCAC Crossover in Arlington Heights.

Cordova Leads Pack for PNW Men at Bethel Junior Salvador Cordova led the way for the Purdue University Northwest men’s cross country team with his 41st place finish out of the field of 151 at Friday’s Bethel College Invitational at St. Patrick’s Park.

Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) ran a PNW-best time of 26 minutes, 50 seconds, to lead the Pride, who finished 11th overall. The time was just 13 seconds off Cordova’s season-best, which he set last week at the Greater Louisville Classic.

Teammate and cousin Alex Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) was the next Pride finisher with a time of 27:10 to place 59th overall and freshman Chris Ramos (Hobart, Ind./River Forest) was next with a time just eight seconds off his season-best, at 27:32 to place 72nd.

Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) crossed the line next with a mark of 29:07 and freshman Robert Corning (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) rounded out the Pride scorers with a time of a 29:02.

Setting season-best 8K times for the Pride were Dustin Pluard (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian), Martin Estrada (Gary, Ind./Lowell) and Brandon Davis (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central).

Marian won the team title with 70 points, Taylor was a close second with 71 and Aquinas was third with 93. Taylor’s Matt Hall won individual honors with a winning time of 25:05.

PNW returns to action Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Pride travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the Seminole Valley Stampede.

Weissbeck, Werner Lead Purdue Northwest Women at Bethel The Purdue University Northwest tandem of Emma Weissbeck and Kyleigh Werner led the way for the Pride in Friday’s Bethel College Invitational at St. Patrick’s Park.

Weissbeck (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) was the first PNW finisher with a 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 45 seconds to place 39th overall in the field of 165. Sophomore Kyleigh Werner (Westville, Ind./Westville) wasn’t far behind, finishing 49th overall with a time of 19:58.

Sophomore Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was the next Pride finisher in 96th with a time of 20:54 and Sara Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was 124th with a time of 21:37.

Junior Shyla Huppenthal (Boulder, Colo./Northglenn) rounded out the PNW scorers with time of 23:13.

Aquinas won the team title with 41 points, Taylor was second with 58 points and St. Xavier third with 99. Indiana Tech’s Tiffany Rauch won the field with her time of 17:48.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Oct. 22 when the Pride travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the Seminole Valley Stampede.

Purdue Northwest Captures Second Straight Team Title The Purdue University Northwest men’s golf team captured its second-straight team title in a field full of conference opponents in Friday’s fifth annual Mike Lalaeff Memorial Invitational held at White Hawk Country Club.

The Pride won the 18-hole event – which was cut short from its original two-day format due to rain Thursday – with a score of 305 to edge Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents Olivet Nazarene (309) and Trinity Christian, who tied with independent Indiana Northwest for third with a 314.

The team title was the second-straight for the Pride, who won the Trinity Christian Fall Invitational Oct. 3

Senior Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led the way for the PNW Gold Team, shooting a 73 (+1) that placed him third after Olivet Nazarene’s Cole Evenson (73) edged him in a scorecard playoff.

Freshman Aaron Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) recorded a 74 for PNW Gold to place tied for fourth, classmate Payton Smith (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) shot a 78 (12th) and Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) and Brian Brzycki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) tied with an 80 to place 13th.

Competing for PNW’s Black Team, senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) had his best round of the year, recording a 75 (tied for sixth) to lead the squad to a fifth-place finish with a 325. Joshua Jackowski (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) and Leo Govert (Crown Point, Ind./Crown) point helped out the PNW Black Team’s leaders with identical 82’s.

The PNW Gold Team’s score of 305 stands as the fourth-best team score in program history. Skibinski’s 74 tied his best round this season, as the freshman recorded 10 pars and three birdies. Mudd notched 11 pars and three birdies, Smith had 12 pars and Wells led the field with five birdies on the day.

Olivet Nazarene’s Matt Winkelmann won medalist honors with is par 72.

Friday’s event concluded PNW’s fall season, as the Pride will begin championship play this spring.

Women's Golf Places Third at Mike Lalaeff Memorial Invite The Purdue University Northwest women’s golf team finished in third place at the Mike Laeleff Memorial Invite at White Hawk Country Club Friday afternoon.

The Pride finished with an overall team score of 424, while the champion Olivet Nazarene notched a 338 team score. Robert Morris finished in second place with a 375 team score while Governors State finished fourth with an overall score of 567.

Freshman Lauren Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) led the way for the Black and Gold, shooting a team-high 88 to give her a fifth place finish on the day, while Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) finished just behind with a 90, finishing seventh.

Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) finished T12 for with the teams third-best score of 100 and Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) finished 20th with a score of 146.

Bailey and Smith both recorded one birdie and six pars each while Spalla recorded three pars and one birdie on the day.

Purdue Northwest returns to the course on Monday, Oct. 17, when the Pride kick travel to Belmont, Mich. for the two-day Davenport University Invite.
