PNW-Coe-Scores-20-in-Purdue-Northwest-Loss-to-3-DavenportCoe Scores 20 in Purdue Northwest Loss to #3 Davenport Tyree Coe led the Purdue University Northwest men’s basketball team with 20 points in an 88-67 setback to No. 3 Davenport (Mich.) University Saturday at the James B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Center.

Coe (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) finished 8-of-15 from the field and 3-of-8 from 3-point land, scoring 14 of his 20 in the final 20 minutes. PNW teammate Mike Williams (Gary, Ind./Lew Wallace) added 13 points and big man Torrance Johnson (Chicago Heights, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) added eight points and 10 boards in the loss.

The Pride (1-3) trailed by 10 at the half, 40-30, before the nation’s No. 3 team was able to pull away late, leading by as many as 23 with 10:30 to play in the second half. The Panthers (3-0) shot 54.4 percent (31-of-57) for the game compared to 43.1 percent (22-of-51) for PNW. Davenport out-rebounded the Pride, 38-22, and won the war in the paint, 40-22.

Five different Panther players scored for Davenport, led by Javon Haines with 18 points.

PNW senior Shereff Knight (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) dished out seven assists and added eight points in a solid all-around game and sophomore guard Max Clifford (Franklin, Ind./Roncalli) added nine points, hitting 3-of-5 from downtown.

Purdue Northwest opened the game strong, leading by two, 13-11, at the 12:31 mark of the first half on a Clifford 3-pointer. After back-and-forth play over the next six minutes, Davenport closed out the half on a 19-8 run to take a 10-point cushion into the locker room.

A Coe triple and ensuing Williams trifecta to start the second half cut that lead to seven, 42-35, but the Panthers would go on to score the next 14 points in the game to take a commanding 21-point lead with 14:36 left. The closest PNW would get after that was 15, after a Coe three-point play in the lane, but the Panthers would answer with a Haines triple to end the threat.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 16, when the Pride host Calumet St. Joseph in the team’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener at the Fitness & Recreation Center in Hammond, Ind.

Deno, Michalski Lead PNW Past Grace, 85-75 Cassidy Deno poured in 28 points and Ellie Michalski added a double-double to lead the No. 13 Purdue University Northwest women’s basketball team to a 85-75 nonleague victory over visiting Grace College Saturday at the James. B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Center.

Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) finished 9-of-18 from the field and added five assists, while Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) added 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Senior Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) added 17 points and four assists and sophomore Michaela Kikendall (Morristown, Ind./Morristown) added 14 points and six boards in the win.

Purdue Northwest (2-0), who held a 44-35 advantage at the break, built its largest lead in the third quarter to go up by as many as 21 with 7:04 to go in the fourth.

But the Lancers (2-2) fought back, going on a 14-2 run to cut PNW’ lead to just nine, 78-69, with 3:30 to play. But the Pride would make its next 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch – led by Thompson (5 for 6) – to seal its final game of the James B. Dworkin Tip-Off Classic.

PNW finished the game 25-of-32 from the free-throw line compared to 11-of-19 for Grace. The Pride shot a crisp 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, while the Lancers were held to just 34.6 percent (27-of-78) for the game.

The Pride also won the battle on the boards, 46-39, with seven different players corralling at least four boards each.

The Lancers fired up 36 3-pointers for the game, making 10 (27.8 percent), while PNW finished 4-for-12, led by Deno and Kikendall with two makes each.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 8, when the Pride travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on the defending NAIA champion and preseason favorite No. 1 Marian University Knights. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT.

Sal Cordova's All-Conference Finish Leads PNW Men at CCAC Championships Salvador Cordova’s performance most likely guaranteed him a spot in the NAIA National Championship field in two weeks, as the junior led the way for the Purdue University Northwest men’s team Saturday at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll ) finished 15th with an 8-kilometer time of 26 minutes, 41 seconds, in the 141-runner race to earn the first all-conference honor in Purdue Northwest Cross Country history.

The Pride finished seventh overall in the 14-team field with 172 points. Host St. Francis (Ill.) ran away with the team title with 27 points, followed by Olivet Nazarene (55) and third-place Cardinal Stritch (134). The Top 2 finishes for the Fighting Saints and Tigers guarantee them a spot in the upcoming NAIA Cross Country Championships, held at North Farm in Elsah, Ill., Nov. 19.

Should Cordova qualify as an individual, he will become just the second runner in PNW men’s cross country history, joining his teammate and cousin Alex Cordova, who qualified in 2015.

The top six individual qualifiers not on either one of the team qualifiers generally earn a berth to the national meet – Cordova was the fourth. The official announcement for individual qualifiers comes Sunday after all conference races are completed at at-large team berths are determined.

Alex Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart), competing in his final meet for the Pride, was the next finisher, crossing the line in 27th place with a time of 27:39. Freshman Chris Ramos (Hobart, Ind./River Forest) finished in 46th place (28:26) and classmate Robert Corning (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) was next in 68th with a time of 29:34.

Junior Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) rounded out the Pride scoring with his time of 29:59 to place 74th overall.

Jordan Posthauer (Crawfordsville, Ind./Fountain Central) and Dustin Pluard (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) competed in their final races in a PNW uniform, as Posthauer was just 16 seconds off his season best with a time of 30:43 and Pluard crossed the line 121st with a time of 33:36.

Cardinal Stritch’s Daniel Garcia was the overall medalist, finishing in a time of 25:41.

Weissbeck leads PNW at CCAC Cross Country Championships Emma Weissbeck led the way for the Purdue University Northwest women’s cross country team in the Pride’s ninth-place finish in the 2016 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at Channahon Community Park.

Weissbeck (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) ran a PNW-best time of 20 minutes, 26 seconds to place 31st overall in the 135-runner race, won by host St. Francis with 44 points. The Fighting Saints just edged St. Xavier (46 points), whose Elie Willging (17:56) and Nicole Watkins (18:37) finished 1-2.

The Saints will automatically advance to the NAIA Cross Country National Championships, held in Elsah, Ill., on Nov. 19.

PNW sophomore Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was the next finisher for the Pride with a time of 21:08 to place 53rd overall, while sophomore Kyleigh Werner (Westville, Ind./Westville) was third across the line with a time of 21:25 (66th).

Sophomore Sara Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) snuck in the top 100 with her 99th-place finish (23:16) and Shyla Huppenthal (Boulder, Colo./Northglenn) was 109th with a time of 23:52. Abigail Bondi (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) rounded out the Pride finishers with a time of 26:59.

The CCAC meet concluded the season for the PNW women, who finished its first season as a unified program in 2016. The Pride’s ninth-place finish topped CCAC foes Robert Morris Illinois, Calumet St. Joseph, Governors State and Trinity International.

Purdue Northwest's Comeback Falls Short in 68-67 Loss to Taylor Despite a furious comeback effort in the final 13 minutes, the Purdue University Northwest men’s basketball team could never gain the lead in a 68-67 setback to visiting Taylor University Friday night at the James B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Center.

Torrance Johnson (Chicago Heights, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) led PNW scorers with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Tanner Keuhn (Munster, Ind./Munster) had 14 points and six boards, Tyree Coe (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) added 13 points and Mike Williams (Gary, Ind./Lew Wallace) chipped in 12 points in the loss.

The Pride (1-2) return to action Saturday in the final day of the James B. Dworkin Tip-Off Classic, taking on No. 3 Davenport (2-0) at 4 p.m. CT.

PNW trailed by as many as 18 (54-36) with 13:16 to play before going on a 20-1 run to cut Taylor’s lead to just one, 55-56 at the 6:33 mark.

Keuhn – who finished 6-of-7 from the field to go along with six boards – had three tough layups in that stretch and Coe drained two 3’s. Coe’s runner brought the Pride within one, but Taylor (3-0) would answer with a triple of their own by Evan Crowe.

Trailing by three with 43 seconds left, Chandler Spring (Covington, Ind./Covington) drained a huge trifecta from the wing to tie the game at 65-all, but Taylor’s Ryan Robinson would go on to drain two ensuing free throws to put the Trojan’s back on top.

After a pair of Max Clifford (Franklin, Ind./Roncalli) free throws to bring PNW within one with seven seconds left, Robinson left the door open with a missed free throw, but William’s runner wouldn’t fall at the buzzer to seal it ofr Taylor.

The Trojans led at the half, 41-25, behind 43.2 percent shooting from the field. For the game, Taylor shot 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor and 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from 3-point land compared to 37.7 percent (23-of-61) and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) for PNW.

The Pride struggled from the free-throw line, making 17-of-27 (63 percent) compared to Taylor’s 7-of-15 (46.7 percent). Rebounds were nearly even, with PNW winning the battle on the boards, 47-41.

Keaton Hendricks scored 18 points and Eric Cellier added 14 for Taylor in the win.

Purdue Northwest Opens 2016-17 With 58-43 Win over Cornerstone The Purdue University Northwest women’s basketball team opened the 2016-17 campaign with a 58-43 victory over Cornerstone in its opening game of the James B. Dworkin Tip-Off Classic in Westville.

The Pride (1-0) will take on Grace College (1-1), a 90-43 winner over Robert Morris, in Saturday at 2 p.m. CT at the James B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Complex to conclude play in the eight-game, men’s and women’s tournament.

Freshman Shae Rhonehouse (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) led the way for PNW, scoring a game-high 19 points and sophomore forward Ellie Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) chipped in 11 points in the Pride’s season opener, adding six rebounds and four blocks.

Senior Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) added nine points, four steals, and two assists and classmate Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) had eight points, four assist and 11 boards in the balanced team effort.

PNW led 25-22 at the break before pulling away with a 17-point third quarter while holding the Eagles to just nine points in the frame, as the Pride finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-for-54) from the field compared to just 23.1 percent (18-for-78) for Cornerstone, who hit just 2-for-23 from downtown.

Nine players reached the scoring column for PNW, who saw all 11 players see action in the win.

Jesse Sheridan led Cornerstone with 11 points in the setback.

Rhonehouse finished the game a crisp 8-of-14 from the field and added six boards and an assist in her collegiate debut and Michalski was a solid 5-of-8 from the floor.

Purdue Northwest Shuts Out Judson 5-0 to Open CCAC Tourney The Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team opened the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with an offensive outburst, as the No. 2 seed Pride shut out seventh-seeded Judson 5-0 in the quarterfinals Friday at Dowling Park.

Five different players scored for PNW (11-4-4),which advances to face the winner of No. 3 seed Cardinal Stritch (9-4-4) and No. 6 seed St. Xavier (5-10-3) in the CCAC semifinals, set for Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.

Jaime Garcia (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) opened the game’s scoring on a pass from Michael Brownsea (Albury, Australia) in just the 8’. PNW would add another goal just six minutes later, as freshman Grant Ugarte (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) headed in a Chris Rassel (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) corner kick in the 16’.

It would be 3-0 just before the half, as Jesus Holguin (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) connected on another corner –to-header from Rassel, finishing at the far post.

Djordje Cancarevic (Painesville, Ohio, Chippewa) went on to connect on a penalty kick in the 58’ and senior Sergio Reyes (Tabio, Columbia) would add his second career goal in the 86’ on an assist from Afolabi Jacob (Lagos, Nigeria) to make the score 5-0.

Junior keeper Miguel David (Spring Valley, Calif./Bonita Vista) picked up his fourth shutout of the season, collecting five saves in the win.

Shots on the day were tied at 13 apiece, with PNW recording nine on goal to the Eagles’ (7-9-3) five.

Cardinal Stritch hosts St. Xavier in the other quarterfinal tonight at 8 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
