Purdue University Northwest Sports Update, April 3, 2017

PNW-Falls-in-Close-Match-at-North-Central-5-4PNW Falls in Close Match at North Central, 5-4 The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team came up close but ended up falling to NCAA Division III North Central College Sunday.

The Cardinals (11-6) edged out the Pride (4-6), 5-4, at the North Central College Tennis Courts in Naperville, Ill. on Sunday.

Tatiana Spak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and Chloe Conaway (Highland, Ind./Highland) started the match winning at No. 3 doubles against NCC's Emily Adams and Lauren Dvorak, 8-3.

Later in the match, Spak picked up the win in straight sets at No. 5 singles in dominating fashion against NCC's Emily Adams, 6-1, 6-0. Breanna Sanchez (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) was also victorious at No. 6 singles defeating NCC's Lauren Dvorak in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) went to a three-set tiebreaker against NCC's Marisa Coladipietro and came out on top and won at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) came up short at No. 1 singles to NCC's Katie Drone in two close sets, 6-3, 6-4. Basu-Chavez and Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) were able to win four games at No. 2 doubles but ulimately fell to NCC's Drone and Coladipietro, 8-4.

PNW returns to action to Wednesday, April 5, as the Pride travel to CCAC rival Calumet St. Joseph, match time is to be announced.

Bailey Places Fifth to Lead PNW at Olivet The Purdue University Northwest women’s golf team placed fourth overall in the final round of the Olivet Nazarene Spring Invite Saturday.

The Pride shot a Round 2 score of 384 to finish with a two-day score of 763 to take fourth, just behind Olivet Nazarene B (734). Olivet Nazarene A (690) won the team event, followed by Wheaton with a 713.

Freshman Lauren Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) led the way, finishing fifth overall with a two-day score of 176. Classmates Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) and Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) weren’t far behind, recording two-day scores of 193 and 193.

Allison Banasiak (Highland, Ind./Highland) rounded out the team scoring with two-day round of 202.

PNW returns to action April 8 when the Pride kick off the two-day Benedictine Spring invite in West Chicago, Ill.

Wells Takes Third at ONU Invite to Lead Purdue Northwest The Purdue University Northwest men’s golf team finished a closed second in the final round of the Olivet Nazarene Spring Invitational Saturday at the Kankakee Elks Country Club.

The Pride shot a final-round score of 309 – four strokes better than their opening round Friday – to finish with a two-day round of 622, just seven strokes off the winner, Lindenwood, who finished with a 615.

Host Olivet Nazarene was third with a 624 in the eight-team event.

PNW sophomore Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) led the way, finishing third overall with a 151 after Saturday’s 75, a stroke better than his Friday 76.

Purdue Northwest senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) had a big second round, shooting Day 2 75 to place tied for ninth with a two-day score of 157. That marked the best two-round of the year for Martin.

Senior Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) wasn’t far behind for PNW, shooting a two-round score of 159 and Brian Bryzcki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) was fourth with a 161, shaving seven strokes off his Round 1 score with Saturday’s 77.

Freshman Payton Smith (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) rounded out PNW’s competitors with a 162.

PNW returns to action April 11 when the Pride head to Joliet, Ill., for the St. Francis Spring Invite.

PNW Splits at Cardinal Stritch Saturday The Purdue University Northwest softball team split a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference games Saturday on the road.

The Pride (11-14-1, 1-3 CCAC) fell to the Wolves (13-10) in Game 1, 9-1, before winning Game 2, 8-6.

PNW returns to action Monday, April 3, when the Pride take on conference foe St. Ambrose at Dowling Park in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. CT.

GAME 1: CARDINAL STRITCH 9, PNW 1 (5 innings) The Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in en route to a big win in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Stritch starter Fatime Sino held the Pride to just three hits in the opener, as PNW’s Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), Caroline Brown (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community), and Olivia Sardella (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) each tallied hits for the visitors.

Down 4-0, PNW tallied its only run in the second inning when Brown, who singled, scored on a Wolves’ error.

GAME 2: PNW 8, Stritch 6 Holly Pagan opened Game 2 with a solo home run in the second inning to kick start PNW in the day’s second game.

Stritch answered with a two-run double by Karly Lange in the bottom of the inning to give the host a 2-1 lead, but the Pride would answer again with a run in the third on a Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) RBI triple that scored Olivia Sardella (single), that tied the game at 2-all. Kotzo would later score on a passed ball to make it 3-2 PNW before Stirtch answered again with three runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

That’s when Kyleigh Payne (Bourbonnais, Illl./Bishop McNamara) blasted her seventh home of the year in the fifth, scoring Kotzo to tie the game at 5-all. Pagan then delivered, belting a solo shot over the fence in the same inning to give the Pride a 6-5 lead.

Kotzo added a two-RBI double in the sixth to make it 8-5 before Stritch scored one in the seventh before Caroline Brown closed the Wolves out for her third win of the year.

Kotzo finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and Pagan was 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead PNW. Senior Hannah Lopez (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) and Sardella added two hits to round out the Pride offensive leaders.

Brown scattered seven hits and struck out three in her complete-game outing.

Purdue Northwest Falls at 12-ranked Stritch Saturday The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent and ranked and No. 12 Cardinal Stritch University at Nicolet High School Tennis Courts Saturday.

The Wolves (6-6, 3-0 CCAC) defeated the Pride (4-5, 1-2 CCAC), 9-0, in Glendale, Wis. Saturday.

Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Stella Evers (Aurich, Germany) won a pair of games at No. 1 doubles but fell to Stritch's Alexi Loomis and Emily Kaftan, 8-2. The duo of Tatiana Spak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and Chole Conaway (Highland, Ind./Highland) won three games but Jessica Pool and Antonia Elze had the upper hand and took the victory at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.

Later in the match, Foltz came back to compete at No. 1 singles in two close sets, she fought hard winning four games in the first set but fell 6-4. In the second set she picked up three games but fell 6-3 to Stritch's Livia Hollosy.

Evers picked up a game in each of her sets at No. 2 singles but lost to Alexi Loomis.

The Wolves (12-5. 3-0 CCAC) defeated the Pride (8-4, 1-2 CCAC), 9-0, in Glendale, Wis., Saturday.

Ulf Grosseloh (Maximiliansau, Germany) and Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) picked up two games at No. 1 doubles but the duo fell to Stritch's Fabio Perasso and Raymond Weich. Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) also picked up a couple of games at No. 3 doubles but lost to Stritch's Gian Pico and William East, 8-2.

Later on, Passett forced a third-set tiebreaker but ended up falling to Gian Pico, 6-1, 7-6, 10-2. Grosseloh fought hard at No. 1 singles picking up a game in the first set and three in the second set but fell to Fabio Perasso.

PNW Baseball Drops Doubleheader to ONU The Purdue University Northwest baseball team lost to Olivet Nazarene University in a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contests Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: ONU 5, PNW 0

After three scoreless innings, the Tigers jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth frame, taking a 4-0 advantage over the Pride.

ONU would score one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI-double from R.W. Rienow.

The Pride would be held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, with the Tigers earning the 5-0 victory.

Josh Arnold (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) pitched five innings and allowed five runs, one earned, while striking out one.

Jake Lindeman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led the Pride with two hits while Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll), Jonny Albers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) each recorded one hit in the loss.

Game 2: ONU 5, PNW 2

The Black and Gold capitalized on a pair of miscues from the Tigers, after a balk led to Cody Moskovsky scoring the first run of the game in the top of the second.

Tyler Kenjic (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) would score in the top of the sixth inning thanks to an error from ONU, which gave the Pride a 2-0 advantage.

ONU would score one in the bottom of the sixth frame, and take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh after the Tigers drove in a pair of runs to go ahead 3-2.

The Tigers would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, which would be the final runs of the game, leading them to a 5-2 victory.

Jordan Petty (Fort Collins, Colo./Highland) got the start for the Pride on the mound, allowing just one run through six innings while striking out one.

Brett Shoults (Oxford, Ind./Benton Central) and Deven Smith (Royal Center, Ind./Pioneer) each pitched one inning for the Pride out of the bullpen.

Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart), Alec Skalka (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) each led the Pride with two hits apiece.

Purdue Northwest Drops Nonconference Match to Concordia The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team dropped a close match, 6-3, against NCAA Division III Concordia (Wis.) at Match Point Fitness and Tennis Club Saturday.

Ulf Grosseloh (Maximiliansau, Germany) won at No. 1 singles in straight sets against CUW's James Forster, 6-1, 3-0 (retired). Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) also took the victory at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) defeated CUW's Gabe Binversie in straight sets at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

However, Concordia (Wis.) started the match sweeping doubles competition against the Pride in close matches for the early lead. Pimentel and Passett forced a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles but fell to Concordia's Christian Docter and Ceejay Schaffner, 9-8 (7-3).

At No. 1 doubles, The duo of Grosseloh and Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fought hard but ulimately fell to CUW's James Forster and Brad Guendel, 8-4. The pair of Jacob Adams and James Newman picked up two games at No. 3 doubles but fell to CUW's Gabe Binversie and Jonah Fowle, 8-2.

Villacres forced a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles but fell to CUW's Christian Docter, 7-5, 6-7, (10-8). John Mamelson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) fought hard but fell in a three-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles to CUW's Guendel, 4-6, 6-1, (15-13)

Bailey Leads PNW on Day 1 at ONU Invite Freshman Lauren Bailey again led the way for the Purdue University Northwest women’s golf team on Day 1 of the Olivet Nazarene Spring Invitational Friday.

Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) shot a team-low 86 to pace the Pride, who finished with a team score of 379. Classmates Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) and Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) both broke the 100 mark for PNW, recording scores of 96 and 97, respectively, and Allison Banasiak (Highland, Ind./Highland) finished out the team scoring with an even 100.

Freshman Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) added a score of 127 to round out PNW’s competitors.

The Pride will complete play at the two day event Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m. CT.

PNW Baseball Falls in Extra Innings to ONU Friday The Purdue University Northwest baseball team dropped an 11-inning game to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Olivet Nazarene, 5-4, Friday afternoon at Dowling Park.

The Pride (11-8, 4-1 CCAC) scored one run in each of the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead, but the Tigers (14-12, 3-2 CCAC) used a late game surge to even the score at 4-4, before picking up the extra inning win.

Six players recorded one hit apiece to lead the Pride at the plate, with Brock Crews (Manteno, Ill./Manteno) driving in a pair of runs, while Larry Crisler (Gary, Ind./Bishop Noll) and Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll) each scored two runs a piece.

Jimmy Skiff (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) earned the no decision on the mound for PNW, allowing just five hits and two runs, one earned, with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Jake Lindeman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) drove in Crisler for the first run of the game on an RBI-single in the bottom of the first inning.

Crews would plate Moskovsky on an RBI-groundout in the second frame, with Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) recording an RBI-double in the bottom of the third to give the Pride a 3-0 lead.

Crews would single in the bottom of the fourth to drive in Moskovsky again and extent the lead to 4-0.

Olivet Nazarene would start to creep back in the top of the sixth, thanks to back-to-back RBI-hits from Kurtis Minton and R.W. Rienow which cut their deficit in half.

The Tigers would even the score in the top of the eight on a 2-RBI single by Ben Hill which tied the game at 4-4.

ONU would score the game-winning run in the top of the 11th frame to secure a 5-4 victory for the Tigers.

PNW returns to action Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Bourbonnias, Ill. for a doubleheader with Olivet Nazarene. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. (CT).

Wells, Mudd Pace Purdue Northwest on Day 1 at ONU Invite Ryan Wells and Patrick Mudd led the way for the Purdue Northwest men’s golf team in a strong first round at Day 1 of the Olivet Nazarene Spring Invitational Friday at Kankakee Elks Country Club.

Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) shot a team-best 76 on Day 1 to pace the Pride, who recorded a team score of 313, just five strokes off the leader Lindenwood, who shot a 308.

Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) added a 77 and freshman Payton Smith (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) rounded out the Pride golfers under 80 with a 78, which matched his lowest round of the season.

For Wells and Mudd, it marked the fourth and seventh sub-80 round of the season for each, respectively.

Senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) added a solid 82 to round out the team scoring, and freshman Brian Bryzicki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) recorded an 84 to complete PNW’s competitors.

The Pride will complete play at the two-day event Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
