PNW-Purdue-Northwest-Completes-Sweep-of-CCSJ-with-10-1-Win-SundayPurdue Northwest Completes Sweep of CCSJ with 10-1 Win Sunday The Purdue University Northwest baseball team defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic conference rival Calumet St. Joseph to complete the three-game sweep at Oil City Stadium Sunday.

The Pride (23-15, 16-6 CCAC) defeated the Crimson Wave (5-42-1, 0-22 CCAC), 10-1, behind another strong pitching performance by senior right-hander Matt Sandoval.

PNW returns to action Tuesday, April 25 when the Pride host Cleary University for a nonleague doubleheader at Dowling Park starting at 2 p.m.

Sandoval (Highland, Ind./Bishop Noll) dazzled on the mound again for PNW to improve to 8-1 on the season, throwing five scoreless frames, scattering two hits, issuing two walks and striking out seven.

The Pride jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the first inning as Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) grounded into a fielder’s choice scoring Tyler Crussen (Wheeler, Ind./Wheeler).

PNW tacked on two more in the fourth inning as Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./Community) ripped a single to right, scoring Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll) from second. Following a single by Tyler Kenjic (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and a walk by Luke Schmidt (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South), Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) got plunked with the bases loaded scoring Kordik, which gave PNW the 3-0 lead.

The Pride erupted for six more in the fifth inning, started by Larry Crisler's (Gary, Ind./Bishop Noll) single up the middle, then his quickness helped him come around and score as he stole second and third before scoring on an error. Kenjic hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Jake Lindeman. Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) scored off a CCSJ miscue when Schmidt reached on an error. Crussen roped a two RBI single to right, scoring Schmidt and Korik. Crisler reached on a fielder’s choice which scored Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) to give PNW the 8-0 advantage.

The Crimson Wave were able to get one run back in the seventh off reliever PNW Jimmy Skiff (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) as Antonio Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to center which scored Kai Sinclair. Skiff went two innings, giving up one earned run, allowing three hits and striking out two.

PNW would get that run right back in the ninth inning as Crussen continued his big day with an RBI single to right easily scoring Kenjic from third.

Brody Kutch (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) shut the door in the last two frames to seal the victory for the Pride, only scattering a hit, issuing one walk and striking out three.

Softball Splits Sundays Doubleheader with Saint Mary of the Woods The Purdue University Northwest softball team split Sunday’s non-conference doubleheader to St. Mary of the Woods College.

The Pride (22-21-1) dropped the opening game, 6-5, before defeating the Pomeroys (24-6), 6-3, in Game 2.

Game 2: PNW 6, SMWC 3 After the Pomeroys took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning, PNW would answer back in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs thanks to some miscues from SMWC’s defense.

The Black and Gold would string together some hits in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a trio of runs to put the Pride ahead 5-2.

After Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) would score Hannah Lopez (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) on a hit to right field, Kyleigh Payne (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) would bring in a run on a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI-single from Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett).

Payne would plate Haley Loden (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) on another sac fly in the top of the sixth, with the Pomeroys plating one more run in the bottom of the inning.

Caroline Brown (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community) pitched a complete game for the Pride and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts while allowing three runs, one earned.

Game 1: SMWC 6, PNW 5 The Pomeroys would go up early in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 advantage.

The Pride would score one run in the top of the second thanks to a solo homerun from sophomore Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield).

SMWC would answer back and score one run in the bottom of the second, before plating another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 heading to the top of the fifth.

PNW would battle back in the top of the fifth after an error from the right fielder helped two runs score, cutting the Pride’s deficit to two, 6-3.

Pagan would plate Kotzo later on in the inning, and Alex Morales (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) would drive in Steffens in the top of the sixth making it 6-5.

The Pomeroys would stop any further comeback from the Pride and come away with the 6-5 win.

Pagan, Leslie Ford (Garden City, Kan./Garden City) and Audrey Headley (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) all pitched two innings for the Pride, with Pagan and Headley each recording a strikeout.

The Black and Gold return to action Tuesday, Apr. 25, when they host Roosevelt University for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. (CT).

Purdue Northwest Drops Pair at #12 St. Francis The Purdue University Northwest softball team dropped a pair of games at No. 12 St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday, falling by scores of 5-0 and 8-0 at Harlow Lockwood Field.

The Pride (21-20-1, 11-9 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) have a quick turnaround, as PNW is set to travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on the St. Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys in a pair of nonleague games Sunday starting at noon CT.

The Fighting Saints (34-4, 18-2) pushed their win streak to eight with Saturday’s two victories.

GAME 1: USF 3, PNW 0 USF got on the board early in the first inning with a Ally Balandis solo home run and Fighting Saint’s starter Morghan Dieringer (17-3) held the Pride to just four hits in the Game 1 shutout.

USF added runs in the third and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead before PNW made a run in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. But Dieringer was able to strike out the final Pride batter to end the threat, as the USF starter finished with 15 Ks and didn’t allow an extra-base hit.

Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster), Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield), Alex Morales (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and Allyson Leach (Demotte, Ind./North Newton) tallied singles for PNW and starter Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill/Bartlett) took the loss in the circle, striking out one and allowing three hits and two earned runs in three innings pitched.

GAME 2: USF 8, PNW 0 (5 innings) USF jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and then poured in five runs in the third to take a commanding lead it would not give up in the nightcap.

Game 2 starter Taylor Barsz remained a perfect 11-0 on the year with her three-hit shutout, striking out two in the five-inning stint and didn’t allow an extra-base hit.

Taylor Kotzo, Holly Pagan, and Samantha Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Iliana Christian) had hits for PNW while starter Caroline Brown (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) took the loss in the circle. USF exploded for nine hits – including two doubles by Brooke Karraker – in the second game.

PNW Baseball Earns Two Wins Over Calumet St. Joseph Saturday The Purdue University Northwest baseball team picked up a pair of wins over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Calumet St. Joseph Saturday Afternoon.

The Pride (22-15, 15-6 CCAC) earned a 2-1 victory over the Crimson Wave (5-41-1, 0-22 CCAC) before picking up a 4-1 victory in Game 2.

The Pride return to action tomorrow, April, 23, when they travel to Whiting, Ind. for one 9-innning game against Calumet St. Joseph starting at noon.

GAME 2: PNW 4, CCSJ 1 After three scoreless innings to start off the contest, PNW took a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI-single from Jake Lindeman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) followed by an RBI-groundout by Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll).

A failed pick off attempt from the catcher helped move Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) to third base, who later scored on a groundout from Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) which put the Pride up 3-0.

Albers would walk with the bases loaded to put the Pride ahead 4-0, with the Black and Gold allowing just one run in the final innings to pick up the 4-1 win.

Fabian Del Real (Calumet City, Ill./T.F. North) picked up his second win of the season after throwing six scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) entered the game in relief and threw two innings allowing one run while Brody Kutch (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) notched his fourth save of the season, shutting down the Crimson Wave in the ninth.

GAME 1: PNW 2, CCSJ 1 Sophomore Josh Arnold (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) threw his first complete game of the season and gave up just one earned run to lead the Pride to an opening-game win Saturday.

The left-hander scattered five hits, all singles, struck out two and walked just one in the seven-inning effort.

PNW struck early in the game with two outs in the bottom of the first, when Tyler Crussen Wheeler, Ind./Wheeler) walked and then scored on a Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) RBI double to right center to make it 1-0 Pride. PNW would add its final run in the second frame, which started with Jonny Albers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) reaching base after being hit by a pitch and then moving into scoring position by an Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) bunt single.

Luke Schmidt (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) then moved the two runners one more base on a sacrifice to set up Austin Kordik's (West Chicago, Ill./Community) RBI flyout.

CCSJ got on the board in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out. But Arnold forced the next three batters into flyouts - one of them an RBI by Sebastian Caballero - to minimize the damage.

Senior Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll) finished 2-for-3 and six other Purdue Northwest batters tallied hits, with Thorn recording a double.

Rudy Medina led the Crimson Wave with two hits (2-for-2) while starter Justin Kortlang was credited with the loss, striking out one, walking one and allowing two hits and two earned runs in his two-inning stint.

Purdue Northwest Defeats Roosevelt, 9-0 The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team captured its 10th win of the year with a dominating 9-0 win over Roosevelt Saturday in the Pride's regular-season finale at Dowling Park's Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

The Pride (10-6, 3-4 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) now await Tuesday's CCAC Tournament quarterfinal, when fifth-seeded PNW heads to fourth-seed St. Francis (Ill.) for a 1 p.m. CT contest in Lockport, Ill.

Ten victories for the men's program crushes the previous record of victories in a season, which stood at four, from the 2011-12 campaign. First year-head coach Lucian Tabic already stands as the program's all-time win leader, after the men's tennis program was added to then-Purdue Calumet in 2010-11.

The No. 1 doubles duo of Ulf Grosseloh (Maximilliansau, Germany) and Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) topped Roosevelt's Serhiy Kiyasov and Josh Moller, 8-5; and Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) made quick work of the Lakers' No. 2 team, winning 8-1.

Grosseloh, Villacres and Pimentel all won in straight sets in their singles matches, while Gisy pulled out a three-set win at No. 2 singles, bouncing back from a 3-6 loss in the first game to top Moller 6-2 and 11-9 in the tiebreaker.

Purdue Northwest Blanks Roosevelt, 9-0 The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team made quick work of visiting Roosevelt University in the Pride's regular-season finale Saturday, topping the Lakers 9-0 at Dowling Park's Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

The Pride (7-7, 4-3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) had already clinched a home playoff match, as PNW will host Judson in the CCAC Tournament quarterfinals Monday starting at 4:30 p.m. CT at Dowling Park.

PNW started Saturday with convincing wins at doubles, as the No. 1 duo of Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Stella Evers (Aurich, Germany) opened up with an 8-3 win over Roosevelt's Claudia and Michelle Beczarski. PNW's No. 2 team of Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador also won, 8-0, and PNW took the third combo win by default.

Foltz, Evers, Yepez, and Basu-Chavez all won in straight sets in their singles matches and the Pride won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles by default.

Purdue Northwest finished its regular season with a 4-3 mark in conference play to earn the fourth seed in Monday's CCAC quarterfinal, taking on fifth-seeded Judson. Should the Pride win Monday, they will travel to No. 1 seed Cardinal Stritch April 27 in Milwaukee, Wis.
