Peregrines Drop First Two Matches of CCAC Crossover
The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team went 0-2 in the first day of the Calumet St. Joseph Crossover Tournament Friday afternoon.

Purdue Calumet (6-11, 2-5 CCAC) fell to the Cougars (10-5, 5-1 CCAC) in straight sets (26-24, 25-22, 25-15) before dropping a hard fought four set match-up against St. Ambrose (5-11, 3-5 CCAC) (21-25, 25-16, 24-26, 22-25) at the Rittenmeyer Athletic Center.

Match 1: St. Xavier 3, Peregrines 0

St. Xavier took an early 14-9 lead to start off Set 1, but the Peregrines would battle back to get within two points, 15-17 thanks to kills from Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill/T.F. South) and Carissa Jones (Hammond, Ind./ Bishop Noll) to lead the offensive serge.

The Cougars would rattle off the next several points, eventually taking a 24-20 lead late in the set.

Purdue Calumet would capitalize on the Cougars mistakes to even the score at 24-24, before back-to-back kills by Heidi Gregerson and Meghan Falsey notched the final two points for the Cougars giving them a 1-0 advantage.

St. Xavier would start off the second set aggressive, jumping out to a early 11-7 lead.

The Peregrines used rallied back to tie the game at 16-16 before trading possessions with the Cougars for the next few points, evening the score at 20-20.

St. Xavier would gain control back toward the end of Set 2 to come away with a 25-22 victory.

The Cougars used a strong start to the third set to gain momentum the rest of the way to win Set 3, 25-15.

Sophomore Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./ Kankakee Valley) led the Peregrines offensive attack with 10 kills and three service aces while Jones recorded five kills in the setback.

Match 2: St. Ambrose 3, Peregrines 1

After the Peregrines fell in the first set 25-21, the Black and Gold battled back to even the match at 1-1, rallying behind the stellar play of Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township/Kishwaukee).

Purdue Calumet took control of Set 2 and never looked back, after impressive defensive efforts from outside hitters Martin and Jones helped the Peregrines jump out to an early lead.

The Fighting Bee’s closed the gap to within two points, 14-16. After a Peregrine timeout, the Black and Gold went on a 9-2 run to finish the set out 25-16.

In the third set, the Peregrines came out to 13-10 advantage, before the Fighting Bees regained the lead and went on to win the third set, 26-24.

St. Ambrose would carry the momentum over from the third set to take Set 4, 25-22, and pick up their third conference win of the season.

The Peregrines were led by Martin and Muhammad who each recorded a match-high 12 kills. Muhammad also finished with a match-high .529 attack percentage to lead the Black and Gold in the setback.

Purdue Calumet returns to action for the final day of the Crossover tournament as they face Robert Morris at 9:00 a.m. followed by Cardinal Stritch at 1:00 p.m.

Purdue Calumet Sets Six Season-Bests at Huntington Invite
Six runners set season-bests for the Purdue University Calumet women’s cross country team in a strong outing at Saturday’s Huntington Invitational 5K race at Crestview Middle School.

Freshman Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) led the way, clocking in a full minute ahead of her previous career-best with a time of 21 minutes, 12 seconds to place 30th overall in the field of 83.

Classmate Sara Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was next for Purdue Calumet, finishing 32nd with a mark of 21:20. Christine Lewandowski (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll) led a group of four Peregrine runners around a 23-minute finish, as Lewandowski clocked in at 22:38 (53rd), followed by Abigail Bondi (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) with a time of 23:15 (62nd); Megan Gliva (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) with a time of 23:19 (63rd); and Georgina Diaz (Hammond, Ind./Hammond) with a time of 23:56 (66th).

Lewandowski (2 seconds), Gliva (29 seconds) and Diaz (32 seconds) all set season PRs with their finishes.

Rounding out the Peregrines was Alejandra Garcia (Lowell, Ind./Lowell), who dropped a stellar 1 minute, 19 seconds off her previous career-best to finish with a time of 26:53 (76th).

The Peregrine women placed eighth in the nine-team event with 214 points. Siena Heights took the team title with 26 points, followed by Marian (36) and host Huntington (50).

Purdue Calumet returns to action Friday, Oct. 9, when the Peregrines travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Bethel Invitational.

Cordova Runner-Up to lead Purdue Calumet at Huntington Invite
Alex Cordova continued his strong season with Saturday’s runner-up finish at the Huntington Invitational to lead the Purdue University Calumet men’s cross country team

Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) ran a time of 26 minutes, 37 seconds, in a down-to-the-wire finish with Marian University’s (Ind.) Ben Hendricks, who won the race with a 26:36 in the field of 89.

Cordova kept just behind Hendricks for the entire race before the two kicked down the stretch for a wild finish in the 5-mile race, which is approximately 48 meters longer than a traditional 8K.

Teammate and cousin Salvador Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) was the Peregrines’ next finisher, running a time of 27:31 to place in the Top 20 at 17th overall. Sophomore Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) turned in a time of 28:34 to place 37th and Justin Peterson (Grant Park, Ill./Home School) was 56th, just breaking 30 minutes with a time of 29:05.

Rounding out the scoring for the Peregrines was freshman Matthew Matthias (Lowell, Ind./Lowell), who finished 69th overall with a time of 30:12.

Purdue Calumet finished seventh overall with 158 points in the 10-team event. Marian won the team race with a score of 37, followed by Siena Heights (101) and Davenport (105).

The Peregrines return to action Friday, Oct. 9, when Purdue Calumet travels to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Bethel Invitational.

Purdue Calumet Falls in Final Two Matches of CCAC Crossover
The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team fell to Robert Morris University and Cardinal Stritch in the final day of the Calumet St. Joseph Crossover tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Peregrines (6-13, 2-7 CCAC) were defeated in three sets to Robert Morris (5-13, 2-5 CCAC) (25-16, 27-25, 25-17) before falling in the final match to Cardinal Stritch (22-5, 8-1 CCAC) (25-19, 25-17, 25-17).

Match 1: Robert Morris 3, Peregrines 0

After falling to the Eagles in the first set, The Peregrines fought hard in Set 2, jumping out to a 10-7 lead, thanks to kills by Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township/Kishwaukee) and Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County).

Robert Morris would climb back to tie the match at 10-10, before trading points with the Peregrines for most of the second set, making it 20-20 late in Set 2.

The Peregrines would continue to fight back and forth with the Eagle before RMU pulled away at the end taking the second set 26-24.

Purdue Calumet would drop the third set 25-17, with the Eagles earning a three-set victory.

The Peregrines were led by Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) who recorded 10 kills with a .320 attack percentage while Elsea notched five kills and Muhammad tallied four kills in the setback.

Match 2: Cardinal Stritch 3, Peregrines 0

Cardinal Stritch would jump out to an early lead in Set 1 after four kills from Breanna Schaedel gave the Wolves a 16-8 advantage.

The Black and Godl would cut their deficit to four points, 18-14, but Stritch wouldn’t let the Peregrines start a comeback, gaining momentum late in Set 1 and heading in to the second set with a 1-0 advantage.

After Stritch started Set 2 with a 8-2 lead, the Peregrines used three kills by Martin to help Purdue Calumet get within two points, 13-11.

Much like Set 1, the Wolves wouldn’t let the Peregrines take the lead, winning the set 25-17.

Stritch used momentum form the previous two sets to solidify their 3-0 victor with another 25-17 win in Set 3.

Martin led the Peregrines with eight kills while Carley Bartolini (Portage, Ind./Chesterton) registered 24 assists in the loss.

The Peregrines will return to action Tues. October 6th, as they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on IU South Bend for a CCAC match-up set for 6:00 p.m.

Talley Shoots Career Round to Lead Purdue Calumet in Day 1 at MSOE Invite
Tim Talley shot a career-best 73 to lead the Purdue University Calumet men’s golf team to its best 18-hole round this season in the first round of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational Sunday.

Talley (Portage, Ind./Portage), a senior, carded his best round all season and his best round since 2013 with his 73, which stands as tied for the third-best round in school history and puts him tied for fifth in the field of 76 at Grand Geneva.

Sophomore Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) also recorded a strong round, shooting one stroke back with a 74, which tied him for eighth place Sunday. The 74 tied as the fourth-best score in program history.

Individual marks aside, solid scores from Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central), who carded an 80, and Brad Bobrowski (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove), who shot an 86, helped the Peregrines total a 313 to stand fifth in the overall team standings, which features a field of 15.

The round of 313 stands tied as the fifth-best team score in the record books.

Edgewood College leads the team standings with a 294, Carthage College is in second place (309) and host MSOE stands third with a 310. Marian (Wis.) is one stroke up in the Peregrines with a 312. Marian’s Rynonen Faris stands in medalist position with a field-low 66.

Purdue Calumet will complete the two-day tournament Monday beginning at 9 a.m.

Mudd Shoots Second-Best 36-Hole Round; Purdue Calumet Fifth
Patrick Mudd recorded the best two-round score in school history to lead the Purdue University Calumet men’s golf team to a fifth place finish in the final round of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational Monday.

Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) carded his best two-round score all season, shooting a 74 in both rounds to lead the Peregrines to a fifth place finish and give the junior a sixth-place finish overall. His 36-hole score of 148 tied for the second-best mark in program history, just a stroke shy of his own record of 147, set twice last fall.

Senior Tim Talley (Portage, Ind./Portage) also recorded a strong two-round score, tying with his best score of his career with a 154, which also ranks fourth this season in lowest two-round individual scores.

Freshman Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) carded a two-day total of 156, while Brad Bobrowski (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove), registered a 167 for both rounds.

Senior Evan Sylvester (Munster, Ind./Munster), who is set to graduate this December, capped off his career with the Peregrines, shooting a 185 after cutting 13 strokes off his first-round score.

As a team, the Peregrines shot a total of 625 to stand fifth in the overall team standings, which features a field of 15.

The team score of 625 ranks as the second lowest team score this season, and ranks fourth all-time in school history.

Edgewood College won the team title with a 587, Carthage College was second (606) and Cardinal Stritch "B" placed third with a 614.

Day 1 leader Ryonen Faris held off Edgewood College's Kyle Bruce for medalist honors, as Faris shot a 74 Monday to finish with a two-day total of 140, one stroke ahead of Bruce, who recorded a 141.

With Monday's competition, Purdue Calumet wrapped up its fall season and will return to competition in the spring. The CCAC Championships are held in late April each year.
